It sucks building right now with the cost of lumber through the roof. I haven't bought any steel siding lately so Im not sure how bad it is right now. Hopefully not to bad.

NXcoupe
05-28-2021, 08:36 PM
Bought the kit in March and locked the price in. But yeah, the reason I'm building 60x64 is because it cost twice what it did 2 years ago. So I had to go half size. When the economy crashes in a year, everything will drop in price.

draggin50
05-28-2021, 09:14 PM
Prices are out of control right now. I was going to do a porch and a roof but Im going to hold off for a little while and see what happens. It has to come down sometime Id think.

Depends on if it is inflation driven or demand driven. At the rate govt is printing money to give away it may never come down. Last year while building my media room I experienced a large increase in prices on 2x4 studs. The first batch I bought in May were about $4 each for in untreated premium wood (the better stuff). By November time frame the prices were almost $7 each for the same. The pressure treated stuff was up to over $9 as I recall. That was due to shortage mostly due to people building during the pandemic and some due to govt printing money to hand out.

I just took a look at a PC upgrade for home. Prices on these units are back almost where they were in the early 90's. Shopping for a used 13/14 Mustang I have seen that some places are asking more for a used one then what they sold new for. Some of the latter gets blames on the CPU chip shortage. But groceries likewise have jumped and gas is at $3 for 87octane and we are just in May. So I doubt we are going to see prices come down much if ever. Hope I am wrong, but if inflation and or demand doesn't get us, our out sourcing of commodities to China and turning back to the Middle East for oil will. USA is becoming like a coal mining town. The mine owns the town and the stores. You get paid in script that is only usable at the local town stores. The mine owns your home you pay to rent. The mine inflates the prices at the stores. The mine controls your paycheck. The mine owns you.

The joys of building. So the pad looks better but the guy that advertises 'gravel' for 300 per 20 tons really isn't gravel, it's slag from AK. Nice. So now I get to spend double putting real gravel over this. But at any rate it is moving forward and I'm in better spirits as a result.

Thanks everyone. I just want it done at this point. Building has been up since July 27, so next week it will be 2 months without concrete. Guy I contracted with does excellent work, but man, is it worth the wait? Just got the updated estimate fixing the clown's work that screwed up the pad in May, and it's nearly 28k. That's why I'm selling a bunch of stuff. This is killing me financially, but once it's built and I can work out of it, it should be worth it. Looking at it, it looked small, till I realized the 16 ft walls make it look smaller than it is. Should do for now til prices come back down to a sane level. I'll have a barn warming party when it's all done.

So, I'm going to try to keep this brief. The concrete guy I had signed an agreement with blew me off for 3 months now. I was ranting and raving just having a melt down over it one morning when my wife decided to go through the yellow pages and look up excavators and cement places. I started calling and leaving messages, none of these guys answer their phones, and one actually picked up. He informed me they don't do that type of work any more, and gave me a couple of recommendations to try. One of them was Qvick's cement and landscaping. He called me back that afternoon and showed up at my place that evening to look over the job. That was 3 weeks ago this coming Monday. He gave me a quote that I accepted, and started on it Monday as he said he would. He got all the gravel moved around and basically fixed all the F'ups the first excavator did. He started hauling in gravel truck after truck, and gradually got the floor level and compacted. He used his laser level to get it to where it needed to be. These pics are before he started, then after he worked on it for the first day.

Next, he moved all the garbage slag to the rear of the building, because the concrete engineer said it would be fine as long as there was enough gravel between it and the concrete, plus we put plastic down under the concrete before it was poured, too. He worked most of that day, and told me he'd be back Wednesday to finish prepping. He ended up with about 14 loads of gravel! unreal. But they used a bobcat compactor attachment that hammered this stuff into a concrete-like state. It felt so firm stepping on it. Much better than the loose slag, it was and is garbage.

His buddy James came to let him use his bobcat with the compactor attachment and while Sonny Qvick was inside compacting gravel, he was outside pushing dirt and the slag up the back of the building for support of all that gravel. Dirt on the sides and slag on the back wall.

Then, James and I stubbed the plumbing in before the final pour Friday. He used Sonny's backhoe and dug a nearly 42" deep hole, and we stubbed out the first floor toilet in 4", then the drain off that in 3", then a fresh water conduit in 3" pvc as well. got it all in, fairly straight and back filled it. Took about 2.5 hours. I can't thank these guys enough. They've done a fantastic job so far.

Trying to connect with a guy selling wire on FB, once I get that from him, I'm renting a scissor lift and running wires. Slow progress.

Have to wire it, guy I was buying the wire from ghosted me. So still looking. I'd hate to pay retail for all the wire I need. Once wiring is done, then I need 2 guys to do what they said they'd do. One is digging the trench to bury the wire, the other is hooking up on both ends.
Shorter answer, I have no clue yet. Hopefully sooner than later.

Ok, so door happened. They came as promised on Monday and then came back on Tuesday and finished up with the door opener and trim. I think it looks great and it is smooth as silk. Very high caliber door and installation. C&C garage doors is who did it. Highly recommend them. Anyway, wiring is next, then paint floors or do ceiling, whichever one I get to do first. After that, equipment moves in. Then, I call Chad and tell him when to come up and check out the place! Hopefully you'll have a car by then!

Good luck on your building. I built a 40x84x16 back in 2017 and then we sold and moved. In the past two weeks I’ve been getting quotes to build the same building at our new house. It’s between 47k-55k more to build now than back then. And that’s just the basic building with concrete, doors and windows. No insulation, electric or lighting.Unreal

Yes, this was supposed to be a 60x120, but had tto cut it in half since building prices are 4 times what they were. Concrete doubled and wiring is 10 times what it cost before. This has been a challenge and a lot of the finishing touches will have to wait until prices come down.
Good luck with yours Jim. I know I've been going nuts without mine.

So due for a much needed update. I had the guy who did my concrete send a guy out with a small backhoe and dig the trench from my house out to my barn. Sounds simple enough but it was close to 300 feet long. Then we rolled out the huge bundle of wire from the barn to the house, and it was barely long enough. After that, we laid conduit and pulled coax, pull string and phone line through it. The next day, the CAT6 wire showed up, so we pulled it through the conduit along with another pull string just in case we ever need to pull another wire through.

Now, I'm just waiting on an electrician to hook up the wires on both ends for power and I can move onto grinding the floor so we can paint it. Then, we get ceiling steel and put that up, and install the lighting afterwards. Once those things are done, which I don't need to rely on anyone to get that stuff done for me besides my friends, we can begin moving equipment in and finally get started turning out work that's been piling up since August of 20.

It sucks that 5 years ago you could've built twice the shop for the same amount of money. I wanted to buy some land and do one myself but I think that ship done sailed. Crazy times we are in. Electric is connected and working. An old friend of mine came to the rescue and did it up right. It's nice to have power out there now. We energized the wall outlets and the garage door opener outlet. So the door goes up and down sans extension cord now. Small victories. Plugged in battery tenders to the wall outlets. It's starting to feel like it will actually get done now. Next is ceiling and LED lights, then paint the floors.

Need to do a bunch of updates. Went to Indy and bought metal for 33 bucks a sheet, cash out the door. Loaded it up in the trailer, had no clue how to strap it down, so we just rolled with it. Until..... a guy in front of us looked up from his phone to slam on the brakes, which caused me to slam on my brakes, then the 90 sheets of steel decided to slide forward and hit the bar that holds the drawers shut under the work bench and proceed to bend it into a U, and push out the front of the trailer nose. It also moved the truck about a foot forward and generated a need for an underwear change at the next rest area.
Got it home, damage to trailer can be fixed, may be a pain, but it can be fixed. Sheet metal siding wasn't really damaged, used a hammer on the damaged sheets as we put them up. Made sure that side tucked under the next in the ceiling.
I have to thank Neil, as well as Adam and Robbie for coming to help get these panels up on the ceiling. It is a BITCH to hang this shit. Next time I'm letting the Amish guys have at it. I rented a scissor lift, another fiasco, but too much to type. I had to go online and get 'certified' to operate a scissors lift. I have a diploma and everythin.
We got it down to a science and started knocking these things out. Ceiling looks fantastic.
I went to Menards to get some firring strips to mount the LED lights to then mount the strips through the ceiling sheetmetal. I bought 20 1x3 crappy ass boards, and it was SIXTY BUCKS!!!!!!! One of these things broke when I picked it up from putting the brackets on for the LED. Sheesh. It's going back, yeah I'm that sour over this. I'll be damned if I turn a 3 buck board into firewood.
So after the guys helped me with the ceiling metal(which this is actually siding, so it's thicker than ceiling metal), I decided to mount the lights. Later that day Neil and I wired them up, with Neil figuring out which wire went where. I finished up the installs throughout the week as we progressed on putting up the ceiling.
These 2x6 boards needed to come down first, this is the North wall, as I realized I forgot to take a pic of the South wall before we started putting the sheet metal up. They came off really easily, just used a Wonderbar and knocked it loose with a hammer.

We kept hammering away at the ceiling, because we needed the ceiling done and lights up so the floor could get painted. I kept putting lights up and we did ceiling panels in the evenings and weekends until it was done. Didn't take too long, but longer than we anticipated. It is very slow going. Up and down, creep 12 feet forward, up and down, 12 feet forward. sheesh. Maneuvering the scissor lift was a pain at first, then I became a near pro. At least in my mind.

We got the ceiling over as far as we could go due to all the crap out of one of my storage units I emptied out to save on the monthly rent. So we have about 2/3 of the ceiling done, 12 lights hung, so it was time to move onto the floor. I bought this paint in December, yep, last year. It's been sitting patiently in the corner taking up space til now. I rented a floor grinder, yet another long story, and after a ton of self teaching/learning/experimenting, was able to get the floor 'prepped' for the paint to be applied. It was 3 days of my life I will never get back and really don't look forward to repeating. After you spend countless hours fighting this machine that wants to do its own thing and go its own way, and keep it on course, you are left with the sahara desert in your garage. Yep, back in Afghanistan it was for me, inch thick layer of dusty nastiness. Oh yeah, this shit laughs at a broom. I swept till my arms were going to fall off, got it to where you could see the floor, and realized there were a ton of untouched places, so went over a second and partial third time(this was because at the beginning I said it was a learning experience, right? Well, I didn't have the machine set up correctly, so my bad!). Finally it was ready. I had Cam manning the paint mixing station while Neil and I applied the paint. Oh wait, how did I get the desert out of my garage? Well, years ago my wife bought a huge Craftsman shop vac for me, and I went up and bought a new filter, pre filter and a filter bag. That bag is the shit, let me tell you. It worked great, kept the filter from getting clogged and kept suction at height that would make a $1k hooker blush. So after sweeping, I put the water squeegee attachment on it and basically went up and down row after row, until I had vacuumed all the loose stuff up. Then we masked out our sections for painting and began applying the paint. This is not for the faint of heart. Huge thanks to Cam and Neil. I think for our first time, it turned out beautifully. Not perfect, but really, really nice. No, that's not wet, that's dry paint. Yes, it is that shiny. It is polyaspartic paint

Delt with that when I ground the walls down in my media room project to get the paint off so I could seal them with Dri-Lok. I did the same thing with a shop vac. Those bags are great and I use them all the time now with a filter on a smaller unit. The floor looks well worth the effort put in.

I ordered the rest of the polyaspartic paint, and this time I told the guy I wanted the slow dry stuff. I gathered my buds together and Cam, Neil, Adam and I got to it. I opened the boxes and found all but one of the pigment jars had broken open due to poor packaging and leaked all over the box. We were able to salvage the white and one gray. We started with the white paint for the engine room floor, Cam mixed it and Neil and I spread it on the floor. He worked the squeegee and I worked the roller. About half way through rolling out the section and my roller started sticking to the paint. We hurried and finished and we checked the labels, fast dry. Shit! So not only did they screw up the packaging, they sent the wrong stuff. We founf 4 gallons of slow dry and decided to use those and did the gray at the back north section. Still waiting on the replacement pigment and 4 gallons of slow dry. This thing is never going to be done.
Neil and I went to the second storage unit and started moving equipment. We got both the air compressors and some other assorted stuff moved out. Have to clear the way so the racks can be gotten to and the shelves so all my crap can be put up on so I can sell it all. At least all the stuff I am not going to use, which is most of it.

Ok, so while I was on vacation, the correct paint showed up on the doorstep. Everybody was busy this weekend, so Neil and I decided to just jump on it and get it done by ourselves. We got the gray for the office down, and then spread speckles all over the area. Then we painted the gray shop floor, then came back over the speckles with clearcoat. It worked out really nicely I think. Next is back on the ceiling panels.

Looks great Mike. I need to do that in the laundry room area of the basement. I have to scrape ol latex paint that someone put over the concrete years ago though before I can do it. There are like three or four coats of paint on that floor. May even have to use a paint stripper product as I m certain that expoxy floor will not penetrate the old paint and will pop up soon after.

I rented a concrete grinder and I bought the diamond bits for it, so if you want to borrow them and rent a grinder, it'll make quick work of it. Uses a vacuum to keep dust down.

Realized I haven't updated this thread in a while. We've been busy. We got the floor done, so I could rent the scissors lift and we finished out the ceiling in it. The spot that is still open is going to be the ceiling of the second floor of rooms, more on that later, when wood prices settle down a bit.
It was Robbie, Neil and I setting this stuff up in the air. Bill came by to help a bit as well. We got a system down and started knocking the stuff out.

After we got the ceiling done, that week I spent a lot of time up on the scissors lift fastening lights to the ceiling. I also had to play moving man, and moved a bunch of crap out of the way so I could maneuver the lift into position to get to the wiring box so I could hook up the last row of lights. I think it looks great and it is absolutely bright. I ended up with 22 lights total so far, but have 8 more 100 watt ones to hang in office, engine room, etc.

I've been busting ass moving stuff around so we could move the racks and some other equipment out of the storage unit. I have 2 left at this point. By removing the racks and some other equipment, we knocked about a 1/3 of it out, maybe a bit more. These are the pics of that after Neil, Adam and I moved the racks in. Surprisingly, a two wheel dolly works great for moving those big posts around, provided you have a lot of air pressure in the tires and 2 other guys helping you to support it. lol.

I asked a favor of a buddy of mine, and he came through like gangbusters. I offered to pay him to bring his skid steer with forks on it to move the dyno and the furnaces, etc. He showed up with two trailers and another guy and he looked at the storage unit and said, it'll be empty tonight. He even cleaned it out for me, lol. It was a ton of work, but Sonny, Dennis, Neil and I got it done. I think these pics show it all, we started out at 645 and finished at around 11:15. We busted ass. One less storage unit. Load off my mind, Dyno in place, ready to start finishing this project and taking on work again.

looks nice mike. those lift setups are the way to go imho. as for the diamond wheel offer, i tried a smaller version of a similar setup in my basement to strip the walls of paint b4 i started the sealing work. 20 minutes in the entire house was filledmwith concrete dust aven with a barrier sheet put up. so i had to stop. the vacuum system does a good job but for interior work in a finished house i found it a poor idea and went to using an air powered scraper i borrowed from a guy at work.

I found a guy on Marketplace that was selling it at 33 a sheet. It's not ceiling thickness, it's wall thickness which is what I wanted. It's thicker than normal ceiling metal.

Thanks everyone! I am stoked. Neil and I will be ready for a break when it's done, but will probably be short lived as we've been Jonesing to get the racks up and get to work. I'll have a grand opening, dyno day, cruise in, etc here soon. It won't be completely finished for a while, probably over winter, but it'll be done enough to get to work. I'm ready to race and focus on other things.

Well, that Monday, I went over to the rental place in Middletown and got a scissors lift so Neil and I could get the last rack assembly finished and wire them all up. We got started right after work and worked until about 10, but got it all done. Looks good to me, and that's what matters. All of them work, at least the motor spun when the button was pushed, the rest is up to the rack guy. The 4 post rotary lift is kind of wired up hillbilly style, sketchy, but it works for now.

Thursday, the rack guy showed up and he went to work with his helper. They busted ass and got it all done. They anchored, leveled, and adjusted all the racks, all 5 of them. They work like they should. I'm really happy with how they turned out and they will even lift those two Mopar tanks without issue. We're getting close fellas! The very back one looks like the car is leaning, I thought oh crap!, it's not right!, but I looked under it and saw that one of the spacers was missing, so I looked around and found it stuck to another one in a box, put it on, and now it's perfectly level as it should be.

Much needed updates. I have been busy and frankly, just didn't have the energy to sit and write and post most days when I finally got to sit down. I can't thank Neil enough for helping me with this. Without him and my other friends, this would not be as far as it is.
After the racks were installed, it was time to focus on getting the dyno up and working again. First thing was to get power back to the auxiliary panel at the rear of the shop. We mounted the panel and ran a few short run wires for outlet circuits.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52412118174_52983d8ced_c.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/2nRtNHU)
Then we started running the circuits over to the Dyno, we needed two branches of conduit, one for the lift and the other for the eddy brake and the 110 outlets.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52412276730_4f42a9f525_c.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/2nRuBRC)

We also hooked up the compressors. They will work in unison, the larger one kicks on first, then the smaller one comes in as a helping hand to keep up with demand. I anticipate some sandblasting in my future.

My buddy Sonny Qvick came out and gave me a great quote for doing the pad out front and graveling the driveway temporarily. The gravel he used turned into near concrete after it was rained on once. He poured a 20x60 pad for the front, this keeps dirt and nasties out of the shop and slopes water away from the doors.

Six cars after getting the dyno up and working, this happened. We were loading the 7th car on the dyno that Saturday, and I was going through turning on the computer and the electronics as I always do, when I clicked on the make run screen, nothing happened. It said no communication. So after about an hour or fiddling with cables, trying this and that, I realized it was the stack that was at issue. It was all green, but no yellow comm lights were flickering. Shit.

4800 bucks later, all gen 2 electronics and WynPep 8 are now in the house. I knew I would need to upgrade SOMEDAY, just not TODAY. But it is what it is, suck it up buttercup, it's only money, it's either that or have a 60k oil change rack. Pretty simple decision after I thought about it. Just really tight on funds but that too shall pass.

Here's a look at the new stuff.

Basically the only thing left is the drum, the brake and the rack. Everything else is new. I will post more pics of the stuff when I get back out there. I was having phone issues, so I got to buy one of those too. I'm done spending money, this shit sucks, unless it's for speed parts!

Nice stuff, I'll just need an invite to come and check it out now.

You're invited. Just call or text before you come. I work from home so I'm around most of the time.

I had a Spare Tower for my Dynojet as they went out on occasion.

Wish I could have swung that. I'm putting all this garbage up for sale.

Hell yea! I bet you got some upgrades in addition to getting it back up and running.
Just upgraded everything really, because I had every option already, but now they have more options so at some point I will be adding some. Thanks!

Wow!!! What an update and so much progress!!! Looks really nice! Good to see you at the track Friday also! Going to be amazing when it’s all done, not that it isn’t now.

Great seeing you and the car was impressive! Thanks, yep it is getting better as we get more built and organized.

Thanks Chad, sucks, but I knew it was inevitable. Just wish it would have been next spring after I had some time to recoup funds. But it's done now, just have to pay it off as soon as I can. We've got a lot of work lined up so as those get finished, that will help a lot.

So with all this being finished, Phase 1 of the shop build is finished. It was the largest and most expensive phase of the project, but it's done and over now.

Guys were giving me crap about the 'phases', but the reason I do that is simple. I learned overseas to set well established and attainable goals, and acknowledge when they were complete. So breaking this up into chunks, or 'Phases' helps me to do that and keep from being overwhelmed by having a clear cut plan on how to proceed.
Phase 2 will encompass putting select walls up with insulation so that work benches can be set up and utilized. Furnaces will be assembled, chimney routed and then fired up. Porting bench, and trans bench will be set up and functioning. Engine room, office, and second floor rooms will be built and engine room will be functional as well as the office. Air lines will be ran all around shop and into engine room, and spools mounted on the walls. We have already started this phase. Phase 3 will be to finish insulating and drywalling the walls and having insulation blown onto the ceiling in the attic area. Water supply line and septic tank install, bathroom and wash sink will be installed, as well. It will also include anything else we deem needs completed to call the shop 'finished'.
That's it for now.
