Ive been on the fence for the last year or so about building a turbo car. After looking into the red 92 Coupe I have, I decided I didn't want to cut that car up to be a race car. So after thinking long and hard, I just decided to build another car.

This car belonged to a friend back in the mid 90's and I was around 19 or so when he pulled into the driveway with it. It was one of the cleanest cars I had ever saw. I think back around 97 when he got it, it had around 30K miles on it. Reef blue LX hatch. Had a stock 5.0 bottom end with Edelbrock heads and performer intake, 5 speed and a built rear end.

I saw this car during Craig's Cincy Speed street car shoot out back around 2011 I think. It had to be the same car.

Anyways, I went down Sunday night and picked it up. Now it has a older Ford Racing C-347 crate motor with Z304 heads, 3550, and a Nitrous Express plate kit. Not as clean as it once was but still a nice car.

That’s great you were able to get a car you knew about for so long. Looks really good also! I use to like Mustang GTs of that ERA better but I like the clean look of LX 5.0 now more.

My first Mustang was a 90 LX hatch so I have a soft spot for them.

I have a lot to do with this one. I have to start by making room for it in the garage. Maybe I need to build a bigger garage!

Whats the plan?

Right now Im thinking that Ill build another mini tubbed street car. Small block, turbo auto car. Something to go 9.0's and be able to drive it. Aftermarket block, 80mm, and a 400.

I already have the rear end, mini tubs, and the wheels. Just need to move stuff around and see what happens. Original plan was to put the engine and tranny out of this into the red coupe and start fresh with this one.

Nice. Heck a 80mm on a 8.2 deck will get you well into the 8's easy. Just put the biggest a/a you can make if on it for street driving.

Nice. Put the red car back to stock and put it in the corner under a cover for a couple years. Drive it to shows. These things are the hemi cudas of today.

Thanks Jeff! That's what Im thinking but keeping the boost down for low maintenance. Turn it up when I need too. It will be A/A for sure so I can drive it often.

Those were so much fun! Sucks that Tristate shut down and we couldn't do more of these. It was awesome getting together and talking and racing.

I was going to put the 347 and the 3550 in the red car and drive it. I still have the original engine here on the stand that will stay with it. Ill gather all the other stock parts I need in the mean time.

Nice hatch Brian! I think it needs a turbo Coyote with a 6R80 and Holley EFI! Put a 275 MT under there and hold off on the minitub then let it eat!

Holley will not control a 6r80 at this time. In a fox with a boosted coyote, i think a th400 would be a much better choice.

Yeah, hoping they get something in the works one of these days. I'm with you on the TH400 being a great choice, and would be my 2nd choice just in this scenario because I know Brian has deep pockets ;) and figured he could go with the US Shift controller (I probably should have mentioned that lol) for the 6R80 which would get him a ton of control and still give him the ability to roll at about 80 on the highway and still knock down like 25mpg. Mostly because of the deep pockets tho. lol

I am a fan of the 400!!!

That would probably be the way I would go. I haven't tossed the Coyote thought out just yet. Once it starts warming up some, Ill get this one out and start tearing into it. It needs a good cleaning for sure.

I bought the one that is in my car for 350 delivered to my door and the gen 2 trans controller is 1200, so 1550 total. And it'll handle a ton of power stock as I and tons of others have demonstrated. My case is unique because most who say they fail around 700 have had them in an 11 up chassis. I'm prob 1k lbs lighter, so I'm going to continue going faster with mine til something lets go. I doubt a 400 that could take this power level would be any cheaper and mine has 2 overdrive gears. I'm buying another trans to go through and getting a converter to have in the wings for when this pile grenades.

That's real hard to beat.

What does the average Coyote swap run? Ive never priced any of it and not sure of what all I would need.

5.3 LS is definitely cheaper.

Walter

5.3 LS is definitely cheaper.

With ancillary swap parts costs being similar such as exhaust, kmember, cooling etc, the major cost difference is the engine itself and electronics. The 5.3 engine and holley terminator will be cheaper than an f150 coyote and control pack/holley. But once you factor in cam/lifters/pushrods/springs on the 5.3, its pretty much a wash.

NXcoupe
01-29-2021, 12:50 PM
F150 11 to 14 engine can be bought for less than 1k now. Use a Holley termx if you want to retain the variable valve timing, HP kit if you don't combined with a set of phaser elims. 6r80 from an f150 is 350 or so delivered if you search. Or, use a 4R70W and let the term control it. I've done 3 swaps so far, so if you have questions, I can answer them.

Nothing new on this one yet. Got it out and drove it finally the other day. Just don't seem to have the power it should. Went to check timing and of course the old Ford Racing balancer has the marks wiped off. So now Ill be replacing it just to get started. Changed the oil and getting ready to give it a tune up to see if it helps any. Its sat for a while so anything will help. May try to take it to the track and see how it does where its at and go from there.

Man, I wouldn't do that. I'd use a piston stop and a 3 buck timing tape from summit or jegs. I can explain how to do it pretty easily either here or in a text. Hate to see you go through all that time and expense for something that's easily repaired.

Piston stop and a timing tape like Mike suggested and you'll be good to go, at least as far as knowing what timing you have in it, be cool to see you get it out there and just see what it does.

That'd be cool, yeah, I definitely wouldn't spray it not knowing where the timing is or what's going on with the tune. I seen above where you said it feels down on power, it might have some timing knocked out of it so it can run on the spray but there's no way of knowing for sure right now. Have you talked to the previous owner to see what all they know?

Only when I bought it. He didn't have much info on it. Adam tuned it, didn't remember when, didn't know how much power it made, didn't know about jetting, didn't remember what it ran, pretty much didn't know anything. Im just going to start fresh and go from there.

For what it is, its slow. 347, 9.7:1 with the Z304 heads, .563/.584 hydraulic roller, Victor Efi intake, 75mm tb, Kooks headers, 3550, with a 4.10 gear.

It has the plate kit on it but the wiring is all jacked up and I wouldn't trust it if I had too. It still has the clutch fan on it also. Full weight car with stock K member and A arms, lowering springs and some stiff rear suspension also.

It will get there. Gives me something to go off of for now.

Hahaha, Maybe not really!

Should run decent. It did before anyways. I really liked the engine in the black car so this one is kinda close to that one.

Since this one is still together and running (minus a decent tune), I will be leaving it alone for the year. The 347/TKO will be going in the Gould car once it comes back from getting the engine bay smoothed and painted.

I did order a 427 rotating assembly today from ZSR. Molnar crank, Molnar power adder billet rods, and custom Diamond pistons. This will get me started for next year. It will be topped off with a set of High ports once they become available again.

You'll have to do that. They put one on a month there at the Maysville Brewing Company. They had some pretty good food also.

The drive was pretty nice as well. Went down to Ripley and took 52 along the river. 140 miles in the car and averaged 16.5 MPG's. Even beating on it a lot!

Beautiful car(s)! I wasn’t a fan of reef blue until a buddy of mine got a reef blue notch and we started messing with it. It is a good color and fits these cars well.

Good luck with the build, I will have to make a point to check in here more often to see your progress!

It grows on you once you see it. I was never a big fan of green other than Calypso before but I really like it now.

Ive got a lot going on. Hopefully I starts making progress here soon with a couple of them. The Fairlane has taken the back burner for now due to everything else I have going on too.

Swapped out the stock radiator and clutch fan for a cheap SVE radiator and a new "old" Proform fan that was on the shelf. Trying to get the timing figured out since the balancer didn't have any timing marks and I figured what the hell, might as well use this stuff I had laying here. And the old stock radiator had a small leak.

Made a trip to Kilkare to see if I could get some 11.90's out of it. Came close... Went 12.05@116. 60ft was a horrible 1.88. Better than my last trip out which was a 12.43@109. Still need to get the tune figured out. Its supposed to be a nitrous tune so Im hoping that's whats holding it back. Ive yet to try it since the wiring for the nitrous kit looks horrible. Ill get that buttoned up here soon, a bottle filled and get back at it.

Has an oil leak now that I need to fix. Somehwere on the pan. Had to pack up early due to it.

Not much updates lately on this one. Just been driving it and enjoying it when I can.

I still have some decisions to make coming up here soon figuring out which car I want to build. I don't ever plan on getting rid of the red coupe so its still in the back of my mind.

My ZSR 427 rotating assembly is done and shipped. Should be here Monday. Took since May but its done! I did have to upgrade to the Molnar power adder plus rods from the regular power adder rods. So Molnar crank, power adder plus rods, and Diamond pistons. I have the Innovators West balancer, Moroso pan, oil pump, pick up, and timing cover here now. Zach has my cam in work so it will be here before long too with my timing set. Heads and intake will be ordered Monday. May step up and go with the 240 High ports instead of the 225's. Still not sure which intake I want to run. Toss up between the Holley Hi ram, Super Victor EFI, or the TFS box intake. Decisions, decisions!!!

Well now that I have nothing to put this in since I sold this car., Maybe Ill figure out what Im going to do soon.

I know its cheaper to buy a turn key car but I really don't need 3. I gave the oldest boy the Fairlane so that's one less to deal with. Still have the S10 that me and the youngest boy is going to build. That's another one for down the road...

Anyways, my heads finally shipped today. Rockers are following them. Down to just the intake which is still on back order. Go figure. Guess once the heads get here, Ill drop it off to Barkers and atleast have this ready if I ever pull my head out of my ass and figure out what Im doing.
