My son had a pretty severe head trauma while playing in the driveway last Tuesday October 11. He fell off of his fire engine push car and hit his head. He was fine at first, he even got up on his own and cried like normal. Within a few minutes he was very lethargic and his eyes were rolling into his head. We decided to rush him to Dayton Children's hospital on our own and not wait on an ambulance. Once we rushed him in the door, the doctors got him intubated because he was almost unresponsive and was having a hard time breathing on his own. They got him all hooked up and breathing and did a CT scan which revealed a pretty bad brain bleed. Dr. Kamian, a very well known Neuro surgeon was called in and was there fast! He ordered another CT scan to access the difference the hour or so made. At that point, he made the call to do an emergency brain surgery to relieve intercranial pressure. (Normal adults are around 15psi, his was in the 80's) the pressure was so great that the brain could not even pulse with the heart beat any longer! He had a long surgery, lost a lot of blood, and received a transfusion. They even had to remove a portion of his right cerebellum. He had been in the icu in an induced coma from the surgery until Sunday night around 730p. They stopped all the paralytics and sedation and let him start to wake up and got him off of the ventilator. But he still has a drain for pressure in his head to drain. We are very hopeful for a long but full recovery. He will remain in the icu until the drain is removed from his brain. As you can imagine the bills are adding up and the icu is extremely expensive, and rightfully so! I am so happy that the amazing surgeon and the great staff have kept him comfortable, they are great!
