We are in the market for a new AC and maybe a new gas furnace. The current AC unit is a 3.5 ton 13 seer piece that struggles to keep up with a hot day. We've received 3 quotes and two of them are recommending an entire new system including replacement of the current zone system. Those included 97% efficient modulating furnaces and variable speed AC units. The third estimate was for a single stage 4 ton 16 seer AC unit. With a 95% efficient furnace we would be spending $4-5k less. A big portion of the savings is probably from the reuse of the existing 10 year old zone system. Is it really worth the added cost for 18 seer AC and modulating furnace?
