View Full Version : 97 Cobra project....

Picked up a 97 cobra this weekend. Needs some cleaning and exterior needs some help. I'm no detailer but I'd guess someone that knows how to bring 20 year old paint back to life could do great things for this car. Engine also has a tick on the passenger side rear head...I think. Bought it knowing that thinking I could maybe fix it or drop my coyote in the car. All depends on how bad it is. My 8th mustang. Most likely will get the IRS from under my fox installed as well.

If anyone has a good black 96-98 tail light sitting around...passenger side I could use it otherwise I'll have to pick up a set.

You tell me what you needs...I'll help however I can. But I've never done it. I'd love to see it cleaned up until I can have it repainted. Figured sometime down the road a fresh layer of black can't cost me too much.

It looks good from a distance. It has its fair share of light scratches and blemishes. Very few dents which was what I liked along with lack of rust of course. Wheels are crap with peeling chrome although the rear tires are almost new and the fronts are decent but wrong size for rim.

Meguiars m105 and a new wool pad and whatever wax you wanna use. I have m205 which is a Polish and it doesn't cut very good. You wanna do it before Columbus?

I'm in no big rush. I have plenty of other things to on the car. One major item is getting the tick noise found and fixed. Other than that I am curious if there is any hope for the paint....from what others have said there is.

Looks clean for the age congrats. Are you sure it's a head tick and not the doughnut gasket from the exhaust manifold to the h/X pipe? Or should I say an exhaust leak.

It actually doesn't have x or h pipe which I will need to fix soon. Really throwing off the exhaust note.
If I could insert the video I took yesterday I'd post it but I'm having upload issues. I'm certain it's in the engine and sounds similar to other videos I've heard on the youtubes stating the problem are lash adjusters.

We listened to it with a mechanic's stethoscope when we checked it out Friday and it sounds like it's coming from around cylinder 3 or 4 on the passenger side. Car only has 102k on it.. which was really surprising.

Damn. Well if you have a coyote motor and it's not a simple fix. I would way the cost's and would think about swaping that in there.

Yeah I have basically an entire different driveline...coyote, t56, and an 04 IRS that likely will eventually find its way in the car. It's currently sitting in my 86 mustang but that car is going into storage for a while until I can bring myself to either sell or get back to it. It's currently sits as an empty shell.

I'd be tempted to throw the coyote in and keep the t45 behind it but not sure if it would like the 100+ more hp from the coyote.

Thats on the list, but its also the next largest expense for the project. I have the trans, but I want to upgrade the input shaft, ideally Id like to freshen up the entire trans, along with buying a new clutch and flywheel.

I got impatient and decided to start looking for the noise. Didn't identify anything last night but the plan tonight is to start the car without the valve cover and see what happens.

Its defiantly more then injectors. I can hear those and I am pretty familiar with that sound having a direct injection ecoboost, injecters tick like crazy on that....everyone gives me crap about that. I am trying to upload videos.

From the video he sent me yesterday of it running w/ the cam cover off, it's definitely centered over the 3rd cylinder or 4th cylinder, but with two rows of lash adjusters it's really hard to tell.

Yeah I'm trying to upload that one but it's not playing nice.

I also had what I consider to be more than the normal amount of glitter in the oil change I did last night.

You and me both. Was really thinking I had a simple fix on my hands and I could enjoy the car this summer and coyote swap over the winter, but that may happen sooner than later.

Coming up on a year of having this car and hoping to get it on the road this summer. I have about 98% of all the parts I need. Last major items are a catback setup for an IRS car and a programmer(wanting an SCT X4 but may settle for an xcal3). Been looking for a lightly used IRS exhaust but I may bite the bullet and buy a new Bassani 3" catback. It along with my X pipe will need some minor modification to bolt up.

Car currently sits with the IRS swapped into it, all new SS hard break lines and new braided SS lines going out to the wheels. Need to put new pads and rotors on too. Engine is ready to go it which I would like to accomplish this weekend and then start running wires for the control pack and run my new fuel lines. I went with the coyote swap kit from highflowfuel.com in order to keep my stock tank and pump hanger. They have a nice hanger that has AN fittings on it along with their 340lph pump which is way more than enough for a stock coyote. Its a super slow project doing most all of it in my little garage. Once its up and running I want to take care of the aesthetics, be it some fresh paint or possibly a wrap just and some new wheels. It should have stock 96-97 cobra wheels on it to start making the car look like a lowered 97 cobra...

I have to ask....Anyone familar with using Ford Racings speed cal box? I have been working with a guy that has done a couple swaps and I believe I am going to need a box to convert the signal from my T56 to something the control pack can understand in order to prevent stalling issue, as well as maybe running a second unit to send a calibrated signal to my speedometer VSS to OSS. I do not hting I can accomplish both task with one speed cal box. Of anything knows something about this let me know. What I have going on --->97 cobra with stock cluster----coyote engine with FRPP control pack----04 cobra T56----04 cobra IRS

egbertnr

Engine and Trans have been in for a while now and finally got the new fuel tank in. Now for my least favorite part. Wiring and running hoses. I am particular about that stuff but I don't have the talent to do it like I envision it going...at least it never works out like that. I also need to find a little more clearance between the hood and JLT. Probably should have used spacers or possibly some alternate fan that has a differ shroud.

Changing all the bushings in the IRS sucked too.

The full exhaust pic is one I stole from another coyote swap car and shows something I want to try on my exhaust. Double X with some bassani mufflers.

Last pic shows my S281 spoiler I picked up and pretty excited about.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170516/df41fe697898a5416b0c81fcc9f4608e.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170516/2650afb57fccd097b6e4d291ad10d0c5.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170516/a80827648688e30442fd958a964d7c3c.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170516/ca9ed4ab8270d2993bd21eda6d6be5c5.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170516/dbca9c10e9937dc3915f8ccd01e39663.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170516/8a6a93ac1cce274275ff18d9247227c4.jpg

Double x pipe?

Yeah the guys car in the picture above claims it took a lot of the rasp out of the coyote. A lot of the ones I have heard with a single X get raspy which some guys like, but not my thing. Could also do an H pipe but since I already have the BBK x for the swap I want to have the exhaust shop make another one and see what happens. There are a few companies out there making double X's for the 11 and up cars apparently which is probably where the idea originated from. We'll see what happens. I have talked alot with Dale Lewis about exhaust setups, I figured since I have to make something up custom might as well be different, if nothing else it will be a conversation piece that you wont really see unless its on a lift, lol.

For anyone looking for an aftermarket pump hanger for a swap or just replacing your stock hanger and wanting to use hoes, check out the site below. They make a hanger with -6 and -8 lines on the lines and makes life simple, no extra adapters.
