Any Guitar Players on board?

So my daughter wants to learn to play guitar and has asked for one for Xmas. I'm lost when it comes to this and was wondering if we had any musicians here on the board that could lend some knowledge. Not looking to spend a ton as I'm not sure she will stick with it but then again don't want to buy some piece of crap that sounds horrible.

I guess that would be me. Is she wanting electric or acoustic? What style of music will she be learning?

Can't go wrong with an Epiphone or a Squire for a starter guitar. The Epiphones are the the lesser versions of a Gibson, and the Squire's are the lesser versions of the Fender guitars. Then go from there.

I've got a Gibson Les Paul 60s tribute w/ P90's and it rocks! But it was a $900 guitar, however if I bought another one I'd get one with humbucker pickups. I love the P90's but they're not as versatile as humbuckers.

honestly a squire stratocaster is probably going to be the cheapest most common guitar you can find. They usually have single coil pickups and a 5 way selector switch. Not the greatest for metal, like humbucker pickups are, but they can sound good. They're definitely cheaper than a strat with humbuckers. I have an even cheaper version of the Squire strat called a Bullet Strat. And even for a cheapo guitar it looks great and plays great. Hahaha I actually have a Squier Strat that I bought to goof around with. You can have it, a stand, battery powered practice amp and cord for $50, just to get it out of my way.

Thats a pretty good deal! Now get her some picks and a pack of strings! Head over to willis music in the mall, and get a variety pack of different sized picks so she can figure out which ones she likes the best, and a pack of 10-46 strings. 10-46's are your standard strings. I like D'addario (sp?) strings. Ernie Ball slinky straps are cheap and very adjustable. Also a cheap tuner like a chromatic tuner, and a cheap tuning machine winder and she'll be set!

Scratch that. Her best friend just dropped off a Guitar and Amp for her. Guess she got it for xmas last year and didn't play it. It's a Fender Starcaster and Peavey 15 watt amp.

Anyone know of a good place for lessons on the east side?

Took mine at Buddy Rogers' on beechmont about 100 years ago

Buddy Rogers is no longer. They knocked the building down about 6 months ago. I live basically right across the street from there off Wolfangel.

Yep, sucks. I used to go to Buddy Roger's all the time to get stuff, and a guy I know used to work there before they closed up shop. As far as lessons go, Willis Music in the mall, or a mom n pop place at someone's house are the only things I can think of to get lessons unless you wanna drive to springdale
