View Full Version : How to determine if a 5.0 engine is a TRUE 93 Cobra engine?

I picked up a long block sunday. And it's a little peculiar... it's a stock engine and the story goes that some old man who spared no expense bought a crate motor from ford back in the day, slapped a '65 289 4 barrel intake on it and put it in an old 50s ford truck just for cruising around and car shows. Well the old man eventually got tired of the truck and pulled the motor and sold the truck. Engine sat on a stand for years until my friends cousin bought it. It sat in their barn on a stand for about a year and a half until they had to start getting ready to move.
I bought the motor. I have no idea how long it's been sitting total but what makes me wonder is it has gt40 heads... not p heads, foxbody valve covers in original condition minus a pcv hole drilled in one of them... and it has the original oil filter adapter that passenger cars have.... not the screw in one that has the hex on it that you'd buy from ford to put on an explorer motor.
I haven't even pulled it out of my truck yet, but when I do, is there anything I need to look for to see if it's a true 93 cobra motor? I would imagine it would have the crane 1.7 roller rockers on it....

Yep, silver crane/Ford 1.7 roller rockers....and the valve covers are a little different ....I'll see if I can find a pic. Different cam, not sure how far you're going to tear into it though. Smaller diameter water pump pulley. Back in the mid 90's you could buy a "cobra" short block or long block from FRPP. Could definitely be one of them....

93 cobra motors have steel valve covers, black, not aluminum, should be easy to spot, and black oil pan too, but remember the GT40 long block ford sold did not come with valve covers, might be that

I bought this thing with no front accessories or water pump. The oil pan is black but I suspect the whole engine has been painted at one point. What I find odd about the pan is its a fox oil pan but it has no low oil sensor bung. It's just deleted all together.

Jesse has an old set of Cobra steel valve covers. I might have sold them to him back then! It should have the Crane 1.7's and the cam shaft was different too if I recall. Im not sure if the 93 GT40 motor had the Hypereutectic pistons or forged.

Well for sure wrong valve covers, my GT40 crate motor didn't have the low oil bung either. Block casting number?

Yep, block casting number will tell the story. Cobra and gt shortblocks were identical with hyper pistons and balancer. Waterpump pulley, heads, rockers, valve covers, and intake were the difference. Not real different than a 96 explorer as far as the longblock goes, save for the rockers. Then summit and jegs have sold those crane rockers for years. Cool story tho.

What will the block casting be on the cobra engines? And.. I forget... is the casting number above the starter area on the block?

Yes.. if it is a 93 it'll have either an F3 for late production or an F2 for early.
