I've been looking really hard at picking up an AR in a. 308
Question is I remember a while ago they were having a few issues with the extractors on the bolt not ejecting the case correctly. One of the fixes one manufacturer did was to make two extractors and I'm seeing wider single extractors. Has anyone had any issues with reliability?

I just picked up a 5.56/223 AR today and I thought about getting the blackout kit and the .308. After giving it allot of thought I decided on the 5.56. Reason being is its a longer distance round. Ive shot over 1000 yards the m16 on a 5.56 round. They're cheaper and more accessible. I hit 20 out of 28 shots in a 10" diamond at 100 yards with iron sites and 3 out of 3 on 5" diamond. The first 8 i missed was from adjusting my sites. The 5.56 is very affective. Are you stuck on the .308?

I already have a 5.56 and I already ordered a 10". 300 blackout upper for an SBR when I get a new lower put together. I was just looking at something with a little more knockdown power. I've heard of people shooting a 5.56 @1000 but what kind of velocity is that bullet carrying at that distance?
I'm just thinking of adding a 308 in there an an AR because I'm used to that platform. My buddy is trying to get me to buy an M1A Scout since that's what he carried when he was a spotter In 101st. If the 308 AR still has issues then I'll go with the M1.

Our division used to shoot 1000yd NRA matches on the weekends against civilians. Normally we would use our match M14s but one in awhile we would try an M16. With steel sites we would max out elevation and I think they told us the trajectory arced like 30 some feet and was basically falling out of the air when it hit target. I have an Amalite AR10 SASS and have never had any extractor issues with it. However I have probably only put 100 rounds through it.
I just got rid of two M1As in the last few months. They are without a doubt one of my favorite weapons.
Last summer I wanted a long range gun and decided to go with a Rem 700 in 300 WinMag. The rounds can be picked up inexpensive, it will reach out there and not beat the shit out of you.

I have 2 long range guns that aren't very fun to shoot. I was looking at the 308 to bridge the gap between the 5.56 and my 300 weatherby that kicks like a damn mule. I think I'll just look for a M1A Scout and call it a day. My other long range gun is kinda pointless to have in Southern Ohio I'm finding out. Not many ranges around here will let you sight in an AR-50. Lol. My dad had a Remington 700 Sendero in 300 win mag and I was so pissed when he sold it (because it wasn't to me).

Bahaha ok thats not horrible then. There for a while 300 Weatherby ammo was $80 for a box of 20. Its come back down to around 50-60. Luckily I reload so it's not too bad.

You shouldn't have any extraction problems with a 308 AR. Me and a few friends have them and they all work fine, they are all different brands. You may want to look into a DPMS in 308 if your budget is low, or a Remington R25. The 308 is definitely the better choice vs a 223/556 at 1000y, but there are other options you may want to consider. If you wanted a good long range AR, on a budget, look into the DPMS in 260 Remington, 6.5 Creedmoor or 243 Winchester. All of those have better ballistics than a 308, although 308 ammo is easier to find.
I have a friend with a DPMS in 260 Remington, he replaced the gas block out to an adjustable unit, and swapped in a CMC trigger, and shoots sub m.o.a. at 100 yards. It's hard to beat that for the money.

I was looking at the Bushmaster MOE 308 who (from what I've heard) bought their design from Rock River who I've had great luck with. But I'm still a little leary of bushmaster after they went through their little slump. I can pick one of those up for right around a grand with some sales that are going on. I'm going to look at the M1A scout and see what prices I can get on them to compare. If they're the same price I'll pick up the scout.

The M1A's are nice, but they are more expensive, and ultimately less accurate. I'm not saying they are inaccurate, but the AR design is capable of greater accuracy. From my understanding, it's pretty rare and expensive to get an M1A to shoot sub moa, and it's fairly routine for an AR 10 (308) to shoot sub moa. Larue and LMT both make AR10's capable of 1/2 moa, that is unheard of with a M1A. I'm not bashing M1A's, my dad has one and I have hit at 1000 yards with it, but it's best 5 shot group at 100 is 1.4". My buddy has a LMT with a 16" barrel that has shot .6" at 100 yards, and shoots 3/4" 5 shot groups regularly. But, the LMT is more expensive than a national match M1A.
Also, the upgrade and customization of the AR platform is endless. But the M1A is a classic. It all depends on what you want to use the rifle for. I have a Ruger SR762, which is a lot of fun, but it is less accurate than I would like, usually shooting 1.5" @ 100 yards.
You may want to look into Armalite, they make a nice rifle, POF, GA precision, Mega Arms, Larue, LMT. There are a lot of options, take your time and spend your money once.

Also, Middletown Sportsmen's Club allows 50BMG, no big deal, so does Spring Valley. Check out Thunder Valley Precision if you are looking for a place to shoot long range. They have targets from 100 yards to 1 mile. TVP is a 3 hour drive from Dayton, but it's worth the drive. If you want a precision long range rifle, check out a Savage LRP in 260 Remington. That rifle is about $950, plus a scope, and you will have the ability to engage targets out to 1 mile with better ballistics and less recoil than a 308.

I haven't heard of TVP but I'll check them out. I'm working g the National Matches at Perry this year so maybe I can arrange some range time with them. I'd like to sight it in for 700M. Honestly I don't think I'll look into the other calibers mainly because I'll probably just pick up a 300 Win Mag to fill that role. Ammo is a bit cheaper and a little recoil never hurt anyone. Hell it will be a relief from the Weatherby, lol.
Thanks
