View Full Version : beating cancer....literally.

A family recently reached out to me. The father has been fighting pancreatic cancer, recently was told he is running out of time. He is a couple years into a 4 year project. 1964 mustang. After hearing the story of the car and the father's health, the list of names available to the family to finish it, they chose me. Very humbling and flattering. His wish is to drive it one time, even if it means not being completed. My goal is at a minimum to get the carpet, and front seats in so his wife can go for his ride. Here's a few pics. I will update as I go, as quickly as I can.

Hope to have it back Thursday. I may have to ask for help to finish. Don't know what else to say at this point. Except,,,,, Thanks so much for all the support, and the family is thankful as well !

I have to take delivery of my wifes new car Saturday morning about 0930. She has a birthday party to attend that afternoon. Would the offer for any grunt work help, a second pair of hands or whatever benefit you any way? I could be available say NLT than 1:00pm to head up to Middletown to give you a hand. PM me with your address if this would be of any help. I could give you 4-5 hours of my time. I'm no auto tech, but I'm free and its a second pair of hands.

Wednesday the family was able to plan a Saturday family get together, 1st and only time they could get all the family together, people even flew in from California. So Saturday am I got up, washed and cleaned the car best I could. With my wife and grand baby behind me in my tahoe, son behind her in my 92, we set out toward the families home. With zero miles on the odometer, and a 1967 license plate on the back , the journey was on. Half the family knew I was on my way, the other half had no clue. 11 miles later we pulled into their neighborhood. I stopped a block away and turned the drivers seat over to one of the sons, he drove it to his dad's house, and backed it up in front. After introducing myself and my family (first time we met ) the went and got dad outside. The look on his face was priceless, he made his way over to me, and with a huge hug asked if he could drive it. So with no dry eyes in the yard he and I were off. We made it two blocks and he pulled over, gave me a hug, and started crying. His wishes/dream had come thru. We made our way back to his house where his 3 kids took turns taking their dad for a ride in his dream car.
After an hour or so of picture taking, the families combined, we all had a reunion style buffet of food. First time our families had met, and you would of never known it.
Although this car isn't finished, it is reunited with its owner. I will have it back in a couple weeks to get hood painted (thanks to a young lady on this site) and finish putting interior in.
To all that have followed, thank you. I just don't have the words what the last 3 weeks have been like.

Both sides are equally close. Not wanting to change tire or wheel if it's avoidable. Thought we would tuck the lip in?

Hope no one is tired of this thread. Having carb issues, ordered a reman 2bbl for it. When a Co worker asked how the car was coming along I told him of the issues and how I'd rather switch it to 4bbl. The cost of a holley 600 is not much more than the reman carb.Left work today and found this in my back seat with a note, this was my fathers, he passed several years ago from cancer, he would want it on the mustang. Looks like I'll return the 2bbl and get a holley!

07-19-2014, 10:49 PM
Thanks everybody. The cast aluminum or chrome aluminum I was going to go with. I do like the idea of painting the raised letters, I'll have to try to get paint matched. Maybe when the hood goes to be painted there will be enough left to do that. Thanks for the idea. I'll come up with a nice air cleaner too,.
chris91
07-19-2014, 11:47 PM
Id do the cast aluminum, not sure how well the chrome would hold up. You could pick up the Edelbrock air cleaner and do the letters and stripes in the same color too. I think that would add a nice touch without going overboard.

Got one of the rear felts in, the other appears as if it staples in? Anyone know about this? Anyway, back at it! Not much of a a pic tonight, hopefully Thursday I'll have more for everyone.

The hood is officially off to get painted. The time is being donated by a fellow banger. Once the hood comes back, the car will come home to me to be finished up. A little interior and the glass is all that's left. Going to switch to aluminum intake and holley 4bbl. Probably going to ask for volunteers to help button it up. Excited to have it back soon.
