View Full Version : Anyone ever mess with a supercoupe?

After some crazy horse trading, it looks like I'm going to end up with a 1989 Mercury Cougar XR-7, supercharged 5-speed. Basically it's the same as a SuperCoupe. I've driven one years ago, and liked it.
I was wondering if anyone here has ever owned one, and what their opinions were?

I work on them all the time, the expert on them is in northern ohio and supercoupe performance is in milford

What's your over all opinion? Are they a huge pain in the ass? I've always been a V8 Mustang guy, so I've been trying to familiarize myself with this platform. This one has already had the head gaskets done, and ARP studs installed. Most of the work I need to do is cosmetic. I was really wanting to know any trouble spots to look for besides the head gaskets. I'm not looking for a dyno queen, just a decent street car.

They have their up's and down but there are some very fast sc's. Front end stuff as usual and the driveshafts are crap.

I saw Supercoupe Performance has front end bracing, so I thought that might be a weak spot. Thanks for the heads up. Any other information would be great. Thanks!

I just bout a sc tbird and parted it out. Theres a lot of shit in the way of reaching anything and doing plugs on them is a 4 hour job lol but theyre really well build and handle pretty well. If you need a spare motor i have one along with the ic and oiping and what not lol

PM me with the damage on the engine, and if you have one of the 5-speed trannys.
Thanks, Scott

Neat cars. Friend of mine has one that he's had the motor rebuilt on but yet to install. I have the cousin of that car... a Mark Viii... its like an SC/XR7... but with a V8!

Btw... if it's a stick shift... if you ever get a chance to get a B&M shifter for one.... GET IT. As they're discontinued, and hard to find.

SC is next gen on he Turbo coupe era. Cougar just the Mercury version. Love Cougars personally. Friend of mine had an 86 Turbo Coupe. It ran really nice considering it was a 2.3L turbo n a very heavy car. The supercoupe was a great step up. Tight under the hood no doubt.

Cool that you found an XR7 five speed. I'd think a rare find. Post some pics when you geta chance.

The deal isn't set in stone yet, should be done by this weekend. It does have the Ripper shifter already installed. I have always liked the Cougars, too. I'd like to have it finished for the SC/XR-7 Shootout. Doubt it'll win anything, but should be fun. Haven't done any real drag racing since I could no longer afford NMRA.

Uh-----YIP....Both. Especially back in my single days in the 80's and early 90's. Harder to catch back then. Much more timid than today.

I just saw you're in Sardinia. I am over your way a bit, too. I have a lot in Waynoka. If I get this Cougar, I need to raid your spare parts bin!

I build front end bracing for these cars in a considerably different design that the kenny brown setup. My setup is stronger, connects to more points and doesn't sacrifice any ground clearance. That was the important thing to me because I like these cars lowered. David Dalke of supercoupes unlimited in Madison ohio is the guy to see about fixing that 5 spd.

Alan, where in Batavia is your shop? I'm thinking if this goes through, I'd like to see your bracing, and just bullshit in general.
Thanks, Scott

I have pics of this cougar ( the interior....ay caramba ) but they're on my phone. How do I post them?

Easiest way is to download the photobucket mobile app, upload them to an album, then just paste the [IMG] code in here.

So, I'm a little pissed. This guy who owns the Cougar and I have been discussing this trade for a week or so, and suddenly the title is "missing," and he filed for a duplicate in Kentucky, but he'd give me a bill if sale in the meantime. I know those take a week or so, but why the hell wasn't that discovered a week ago? So, I walked until he gets a title. It seems a but shady. I told him I thought that was bad business, and should have been taken care of long before he and I dealt. WTF? My Tracker is nothing but a woods toy, but I know where the damn paperwork is. Thoughts?

Apparently I'm stupid. Do I paste the IMG code in the text or in the attachments? I've tried pasting in the attachments, and I'm too damned dumb to get it right.

You're not stupid. You're just beginning to show your age. First sign of getting older is when technology starts to surpass you.

See there you go.

It could be, if the hackleberry can shit a title for it. Otherwise, he can keep it.

Is it just me, or does the dash in those cars seem kind of plain? I don't know why, but I guess I just sort of expected more for some reason.

I think you're right Rick. Never cared for the dashes in the birds or cougars.... I love the Mark VIII dash better. I'm also kinda partial.

The dash in the mark viii looks like you should driving down a runway! The Cougar dash only has a rolltop desk for the passenger.

No shit? Actually, I'm not surprised. I told him to keep it, or try and peddle it someone else. The deal got shadier and shadier. I keep my toys in my dads shop, so when the big goofy dude gets out to look at my Tracker, and sees Pop with a .45 on his hip, all his douchebaggery stopped. Bottom line, dude is broke, and is trying to hustle. Which I'm all for, but be honest. For all he knew, I might have bought it with no title.

Not really, none that are for sale. I only have 2 complete sets, one on a car, and one destined for a car. But judging by the reply to Kevin above, doesnt look like you'll need em.

Yeah, I guess that's what I get for jumping the gun! I'm a little salty about getting my time wasted. Oh well, scouting for mustangs again! Thanks for all the info everyone!
