What type of Pay for contract work

So I left my old job 2 months back. They are now asking me to be a independent contractor(engineering). Does any one on here know what a going rate is? Don't want to go in half cocked and get checked out of money. $40 an hour, $50 an hour, or more?

1099-IC's get no benefits, have to pay double the FICA/SSI since the employer isn't putting in their 1/2.

I know what some common labor rates are in industry that I have worked field service. I can provide you those numbers if you think it would help. I do seem to recall that application Engineers at Makino working on contract were getting between $60-$70 an hour in 2002.That was flat out with no benefits at all. Some of them had degrees others were just very good at what they did.

Definitely as a contractor you should be getting a lot more than if you were on some ones staff. In my field about 50% of the techs are contractors, however most have to work through a contracting house that kinda dictate the rates. Take into consideration any expenses also if you travel, have to maintain a home office etc.

I was just offered $90/hr for engineering/consulting contract work. I'm in the video conferencing/unified communications arena. I engineering complete end to end communications for corporations. Probably a bit of a different arena though. This was with all the taxes and benefits coming out of my pocket though.

nope I guess they are running me thru a contract house who will be paying the other side. I will be supporting production and setting up all the jobs for the shop. I told them 90 an hour if I would be covering both sides of the taxes.
