View Full Version : What combo is the most fun?

I keep seeing a lot of different people going with bigger, better, more expensive parts and it seems like a ton of frustration comes with it.

That got me thinking what was your / is your favorite combo that was the most fun that didn't break the bank, wasn't a maintenance nightmare and would actually last?

I've always thought a stock 302 with some TF FAC 170's, matched intake and cam with a small turbo on 8 lbs and a good tremec 5 speed would be a blast and relatively maint free for a long time if done correctly.

Thoughts?

The 05 when it was running 7psi boost and axle back exhaust. 427RWHP 406T and reliable as hell. Poot gas een it, poot tars own it, an it'll go.

But then I wanted more and ramped it up. LT's, O/R Xpipe, magnaflow axle back, 9.5psi pulley, KB boostapump, Brisk +1 colder plugs, custom cams, upgraded JLT CAI, and tuned by S/M motorsports. Made 507/463.

Should have simply added the pulley, and boost-a-pump, plugs, and CAI and been done.

Stock. Sounds stupid but my '94 GT has over 240,000 miles. Reliable as hell.

Yeah it's not fast, but it is just fast enough to have fun, and doesnt need tuning or anything like that, and has a few bolt on parts.

Would I like it to be faster? yeah probably, but the unreliability and quirkiness would drive me crazy.

I've got heads/cam/intake/headers/pullies/etc for it... but I cannot bring myself to tear the motor apart! not yet at least!

Now, the Lincoln... It needs to go faster, but not too fast! because it was also fun in stock form... should be more fun with the gears/stall/exhaust/tune lol

I love my current combo of a stock block, but the bug has bit me and now I have a dart block and going for more power, but my thoughts are to turn it down and grow into the car as far as suspension and learning to control it.

A 351w, some decent heads, and a manual trans is a lot of fun on the street.

Id say a nice roller with no drivetrain is the most fun.

My original combo before I got stupid. :bangwall:

Stock block ('69) .030 over 351W with out of the box Victor Jr. heads, decent hydraulic roller cam, Trick Flow intake, LTs, C4 tranny, and a NX adj. nozzle system. Ran 11.50s on nuts and 9.80s on the spray. Literally drove the car everywhere and never even so much as nipped a plug. My plan for the winter I tore it down was to stroke it out to a 393, port the heads, go a little bigger with the cam, put a "Spyder" intake on it, and go to a NX plate system. REALLY wish I had stuck with that plan. Actually had all that done and then decided I needed to go DR racing and never put it together. Been chasing my tail ever since.

Depend on what your idea of fun is. My first 302 with GT40 heads, cobra intake, shorties and an E cam was a ton of fun. That was when sliding the car around corners was still possible and banging gears didn't break anything. If your not stuck on running low 9's or 8 seconds passes, I don't think there's anyway to beat a 408 stroker with good heads, roller cam and an OD tranny like a Lentech. You'll have tire burning fun from stoplight to stoplight and be able to cruise it anywhere you want to go. The blocks are strong, even the later roller blocks. I'm 100% positive you wouldn't regret going that route.

my favorite, lil explorer 302, 70mm turbo, tko, and 3.55's. Was a blast to drive, no maintenance and would run mid to low 10's.

97 cobra. leather, AC, PS, stereo system wide street tires and drag radials. built t45 and a 03 cobra swap. 493 rwhp put 93 gas in and go. youre familiar with the taillights from your r6 :)

Out of the three street cars we have I absolutely love driving the 90 Kenny Brown. It has a few bolt ons doing just under 300 hp but leaks oil like the Exxon Valdiz. Second would be my daughters bone stock 03 Mach, I love that car.

My Mach was probably the best with stock long block, all the bolt ons and a V2 running 8 lbs. The thing was fast, fun and I didn't have to worry about it breaking everytime I pulled out of the driveway. That wasn't good enough, so about 60k later the street tune is doing 750 and I'm so uptight when I drive it I can hardly enjoy it.

9.90's just stabbing the throttle. Probably would have went .70's with some tinkering.

One combo that I liked in my 95 was hci 306, novi 2k, t5, 3.73. Went 11.0 at 130 on pump.

2003 Cobra with ported supercharger, pulley, CAI, tune and exhaust. 505hp at the wheels and the perfect balance of fun and reliability. Just be careful launching it on drag radials with the IRS. :)

Twins or a mother daughter combo can be fun.

Sometimes I miss my car just having the PI swap and some bolt ons. Life was much simpler then.

My current combo has been my favorite (302/twisted wedges/76 mm turbo/glide). But the one before is a close second (302/twisted wedges/novi 1000/syncronized g-force T5). I Wish I would have had my faceplated g-force on that setup, I would probably still have it if I did!

THIS!! Pretty much exact set up my first 04 Cobra was. It was my daily driver for a solid year and I drove that car HARD for 11k miles with no problems.

We've got a 95 GT with a set of GT40 heads, GT40 explorer intake, bbk X, flows catback, 410 and a 5 speed, and that thing is a blast to drive. I forgot how much fun a simple combo like that can be. I'm about to put one of those together, but this time with a built AOD or 4R70W.
