I have a supercharged 97 cobra and yesterday i was racing a bike and in the higher rpms it let out a white cloud out the tailpipes then started pouring white smoke out the exhaust i parked it in my garage and even at idle it was filling the garage with smoke the smoke smelled like gas and was burning my eyes but I'm stumped on what it could be any ideas?

Sounds like a head gasket issue too me.

That's what I've hearing alot of. Any way to be sure?

You can dip a Combustion test strip into the radiator. Or do a leak down test. Is it overheating at all?

I agree that it sounds like a head gasket but I haven't seen a lot of mod motors blow head gaskets...at least not without other more signigicant damage. Is it a more or less stock engine? Maybe it lifted a head.

After further thot u could of had my issue and lifted the skirting on a couple of pistons also?

I'm starting to wonder if my temp gauge even works so i can't be 100% on that and its stock bottom end with 455rwhp out of the vortech v1

How much boost are you running? I think stock head bolts on mod motors are good to like 12#. I know 302 motors are around 10#. Like it was said above, try a leak down test, pressure test the coolant system, and either the strips or the fluid type tester that senses hydrocarbons and turns the fluid yellow/green.

I used a combustion gas tester. Its like $35 from NAPA. Very easy to use.

A compression test is free and will tell you if anything is wrong/damaged.

stock head bolts are good for far more than 12psi

I'm only running 8lbs and I'm going to run a compression test and a leak down test Thursday i tried starting it today and it would fire but then die right after and was still smoking and smelled like straight fuel

I have not seen a blown head gasket on a mod motor. If I was going to guess, I would say that you bent a rod and/or piston has a the ring lands broken off. 455 on a stock short block is a time bomb. They are really able to handle around the 400rwhp max. If you were running high rpms, I would guess that you pushing closer to the 11lb mark.

I broke ring lands on all four pistons on driver side and the car didn't smoke a bit made all kinds of noise tho.I guess its possible it would smoke on how bad it is.Ive also seen blown head gaskets on mod motors just hard telling just diagnos the issue and see what you find with it and get back with use.sorry too hear this man ive been there.any power loss?

Ive seen a blown head gasket on a mod motor and I agree, seems like its something internal. When my head gasket blew it didn't smell like gas and it still ran fine, just kept pushing coolant out of the cap and overheating. Maybe you over reved it and bent a valve or something and its not sealing. If that's the case then you probably damaged a piston also. Let us know how the compression test goes. Good luck.

Yeah doesn't make any noise besides the normal head tick its had for the last 2 years lol

Was the fuel smell coming out of the exhaust or do you just smell fuel in general?

Thanks guys I'll let you know how the tests go. If it is something internal just gives me an excuse to build it and throw more boost to it. I did have a check engine light on for rev limiter though :o

It was coming out the exhaust

Seems like its not burning the fuel in the combustion chamber. Maybe not be getting spark to some cylinders or something with an injector. Check you fuel and ignition system as well.

I'm honestly not much of a mechanic i just love mustangs and drive them lol but my dad is the one who built both of mine and that's what he thought it was to either the regulator or injector or a dead coil

I broke all 4 ring lands on the drivers side on 2 4v they both smoked a lot and had a lot of blowby and smelled like fuel they had no conpression on all 4cylinders

Check the oil and see if it smells like there is gas in it. The bottom end in these cars suck. The rods and pistons don't like to bend or flex, they just break!
Save yourself some time and pull the motor and have it built. I would recommend Barker Machine & fab, or get a terminator shortblock.
Get away from TTY bolts though. You will be happier knowing its not going to fly apart....lol

TTY bolts in 03/04 cobras hold up to a lotta power and are not known to break.

Good news is found out it was nothing serious i pulled the plugs and number 7 plug was fouled so now its between the plug itself or at worst injector stuck open

After pulling the plugs and replacing them and it still smoking we ran a compression test and found number 7 cylinder to only have 60 while the others had 160-180

Now I'm going to pull the motor buy these forged internals off a buddy of mine build that block and send it up to Adam at s&m again
