Rebuilding my 302. I'd like to build a motor to handle nitrous or boost. And hopefully get pistons and rods only if not a complete rotating assembly for under $1000. I'm on a budget so keep the ideas cheap :D

I'm nitrous right now but if I choose to go boost next year I'd rsther not tear it back apart and buy a kit. So what's a good universal kit?

I'd throw some good rod bolts in it and a set of pistons stay about 10:1 and spray it, then later it will still be safe for boost

As much as I hate to agree :bigthumb The stock block is your weak link on a 302 with boost. You can put a $7000 rotating assembly in it and 550ish rwhp is still your limit if you want it to last. (I have gone 100 hp over this with no issues but I wouldn't advise it)

I'd be happy with 500 this summer. My goal this year is 12's with spray. Next year I wanna pick up a dart block and be in the 10's safely and with a reliable set up. I pulled my motor tonight and need something tondo with it.

DSS or Probe has about the cheapest forged piston that I found when I put my motor together

I am in the same boat as you, S&M tuned my stock block turbo. Car was making good power with cast iron gt40's, a trick flow stage 1 cam, and a system max intake. Care with a stick made 541 at the wheels. With an auto it made 495 at the wheels. After a conversation with Adam at S&M, I was going to put a 306 with better heads, and like he said the stock block is the weak link, do a seach on corral.net or yellow bullet and you will find all kinda of treads with H.P. limit on a 302, they all are arounf 550. So like your wanting I picked up a Dart black, now saving for a rotating assembly. Id say just rebuild the 302, make your 500 rwhp and have fun with it, while saving for the good stuff!!

HAHA and thanks for agreeing!! HAHA

cool article on fly cutting the pistons for larger valves if needed

Should I atleast grab a set of forged pistons so the nitrous doesn't melt the cast ones?

U can use hyperuetectic pistons on the cheap and spray up to a 150 shot on a good tune all day long, I'd say if it has a lot of miles on it then it will need bored out a rebuilt shortblock with hyper pistons and good bolts would prolly run right around 1000

Depending what year the engine is, it already has forged pistons so running Nitrous reasonably should not be an issue on the correct tune.

its all about the tune! I would spend that money on a tune, and stick with a known good decent short block out of a fox older than a 93

Save you money and buy a DART,Man-o-war,A4 block or some thing similar. If I had to do my build all over again,I would spend it on a block that can hold the power I want to throw at it.

Nitrous doesn't melt pistons, shitty tunes do :bigthumb

I think I'm just going to rering it for now and get a good tune. Adam you gonna hook me up? And dave for a dart block and internals.

If that motor has a lot of miles on it I would check the cylinders to make sure they are in good enough shape for a re ring, just cause they look good to the eye doesn't mean they are run a dial bore gauge on all the cylinders to see if they are in spec
