Plastidipping cars : Gauging interest

So I was considering starting to do this professionally if there is enough interest for it. If you guys haven't seen it, look it up, its a really easy way to change the way your car looks, and protects the original paint.

If I were to offer the service of plastidipping a whole car for $250-300 would it interest anyone? This would be through a high end spray gun, and can be any of the following

Your choice of color

flat, gloss, metallic, pearl

dip your wheels the same color as the car free with dipping.

Dipping wheels only $50 with any color and sheen option

All plastidip is 100% removable at any time, and is washable with a pressure washer after being in the sun for a minimum of 2 days (average full cure time).

Prices may actually get a bit cheaper as well depending on cost of buying the materials in larger quantities.

This fender was used as a test because it is in rough shape, and I wanted to see how well it would hide the imperfections.

I was going to wait to do the full car until the engine was running, basically to eliminate the need to respray the fenders again. I have pictures of my brother's dodge as well, though I will have to get them uploaded later.

Colors are as follows

Black, White, Red, gunmetal gray, clear, blaze blue, blaze green, blaze orange, blaze pink, Blaze purple, blaze yellow, camo black, green, brown and tan.

Clears - Metallic copper,gold or silver, pearlizer, gloss.

Custom colors can also be made, though they will be a bit higher cost, because they require special colorants. I'd probably be willing to do that for an extra $15 per gallon needed. Most cars can be done in 1 gallon, but I can spray up to 2 gallons, which would be covered in the $300 range. Every gallon past 2 gallons raises the price $50.

I have access to a paint booth that my friend has in Wilmington for all jobs.

I could do a quad in Blaze orange for around $100, I would prefer to take the plastic off, but could do it with it on the atv.

I've used black a lot for accents on cars. I just sprayed my motorcycle white, I wanted to do it red but couldn't find it in any hardware stores. It really is neat stuff, flows out real well and dries smooth, and if you know what you're doing it's easy to remove with no signs of it ever being on the vehicle. My bike is a '77 with original paint that was faded and the plastics had some nicks in them, after spraying it white I've had a ton of compliments on it and nobody has known it was a temporary rubber coating until I told them.

BTW, these are really good prices for the cost of material and the work and experience needed.

The bike looks great in White. I used the only red can I have ever found at Ace hardware to do the test on the Nissan. I plan on finishing the car in a red pearl when I get the engine swap completed.


Plasti Dip can hold up to 300 degree temperatures as well, so you can coat your exhaust tips and parts of your engine bay if wanted. Obviously you want to put this stuff in a place where you can spray smoothly, and be removable.

BTW.... I "almost" got killed BY a KZ400. I was on the back of GS1000 that was making a turn on a city street.. Asshole on the KZ was flying up behind us FAST, we leaned into the turn, I hear him coming up on us fast and figured he's going around the left of us..... NO ! MF'er decides to come around our RIGHT side and T-BONED us !! Asshole hit our bike right between our legs! He was doing about 40MPH when he hit us. We all flew off our bikes, slammed my head on the ground HARD....made me believer in helmuts! I got off the ground, ripped my helmut off.....when up to the dude from the KZ......wound back my helmut and was going to drill him in the face with it...... little voice in my head yelled NO !! I would still be in jail if it weren't for that!

what you do is rub an edge until you get it to peel up, then it will peel off in one giant piece. It really is quite amazing to watch how well it holds til you hit it just the right way.

GREAT price compared to a certain shop up in Columbus that charges 700 to do a car or a grand to do a couple pinstripes and the wheels with the car.... Guy overcharges for EVERYTHING though so its no surprise....

It doesn't absorb any dirt. After the initial cure you can wash the thing at a car wash with no issues. I wouldn't drive through a car wash with the high speed spinning brushes (untested but I think it would mimic the peeling motion), but you will have no problem spraying a high pressure stream of water at it.

I've gotten some dirty handprints on the bike pieces while working on it, and after I was finished I just took a soapy rag and wiped it down then dried it off with a towel and it was fine. I don't think you even have to be quick with cleaning it, but being white I was a little worried it might stain if I let it sit.

No issues with that, but JRC is correct. If it were to do that, you would just spray over it, allow it to bond, then peel it back off if you need to. This stuff prefers to stick together, so it does really well at that.


The shop where I will be spraying cars is in Wilmington as well. It is not a public shop, it is a car lot, I just have access to it as a friend.

I done an atv and dropped the headlight when it was wet. I wiped the area with the dirt in it off and let it dry then touched it up and you cant even tell where it was

Car just needs to be clean. I plan on pre-cleaning all cars, if they are totally disgusting then yes, you will be charged extra :lol:

The plasti-dip can be done over primer but it is much easier to get off if the car is painted. I will shoot you a text tomorrow, going to bed now, its been a pretty long day.

I do have 100% access to the paint booth at all times now, worked out a business deal with my friend, looks like its time to start stocking supplies to be ready. Initially there is going to be a little lead time as I have to order the paint in as you guys want it, but I should be able to start carrying some of the colors pretty quickly.

Black will pretty much be guaranteed in stock as its the easiest to get ahold of.

First customer's ATV is complete. ATV plastic is a pain, lots of curves, coating both sides, and imperfections in the plastic like to show up, but overall I am really happy with how it turned out

Thanks, just as an FYI, when I do this process I recommend 2 full days in the sun before giving it any abuse, if that is not an option, I recommend at least 4 days in 60+ degree weather. Obviously the colder it is, the longer you should wait.

I pretty much have decided to not make much money on all my early projects, mainly because I want to get the word out there about the business. I want to be at the price point where people don't really have to think about it. I mean, if you don't like it, you can peel the stuff off.

Also, black is much cheaper/easier to get for me, so I wont be pressured to place a special order for it.

Depends on how much of a difference the color is. If your going from a dark color to dark color it should be around $300. If you want gloss its a little more.

After the plastidip cures, it would be fine in the water, it is basically a rubber coating. If your going to a flat color I should be able to do it for around $150-200

I fell a bit behind on getting the gun and stuff. Being as I am trying to start this business with no extra money really, its made things hard to start. Anyone that wants to jump in and get dipped right away will have to put half down so I can get the supplies ordered.

Most cars can be done for $300, the day the $150 is put down, the dip will be ordered.
