I know this is a Mustang site but my friend is trying to decide on a 1972 Mustang or a 1973 Mercedes convert. The Mercedes is a little cheaper and mostly stock. The Mustang has a fresh motor and recent paint. I personally thought I would lean more towards Mustang but I know nothing about Mercedes never own or drove one. What do you guys think?

Unless he has more money than sense, I'd suggest the mustang. Parts for old American cars are hard to find sometimes, parts for old German cars are goin to be more expensive and even harder to source.

Mustang. Try finding parts for a 73 Mercedes vert.

fresh engine, recent paint spells better deal even at a "slightly" higher price. Benz parts are expensive simply because they are benz parts...old or new.

I have experience w/ the Benz 380/450 SL's while they are cool in there own right they are very "needy" cars a times, very prone to hidden structual rust, complicated engine componets etc.

The Mustang will be basically bullet proof in comparison, just my .02:bigthumb

I work at a specialty european shop and I'd highly suggest against an older benz...bad idea.

Don't give the Benz a second thought.

X2... I have worked on these cars for years and they can quickly become a money pit!

Unless you are REALLY good at diagnosing complex electrical systems, I would recommend against an SL Mercedes. They're awesome cars, very well built, but it's still a 40 year old car and it's not a simple blunt instrument like a Mustang.

Oh no the Stang just sold literally one hour before he went to pick it up. Now he is talking about the Mercedes I told him what you guys said hope he realizes. Sometimes it is hard to control yourself then later you realize and you get buyers remorse.

On the plus side, that looks like it has the Euro bumpers and headlights, so it may be lacking all the emissions crap on the US market cars.
