Advice on SRA/IRS trade

Ive been talking to some guys on svtp about trading my 04 Cobra IRS for their SRA. Im pretty close to sealing a deal with a guy in Auburn Alabama I think. Lol I know right? So far away. So Im looking for some insight on this deal. My IRS is stock that has the 31 spline axles and diff with as far as I know about 85k on it. My stock bilstein shocks and I believe it has H&R springs. They were on the car when I bought it. And my Flowmaster catback. And of course all the hardware need to do the swap. He has a stock SRA out of a Mach 1 with a 3.55 gear and Limited slip diff with about 40k on it. With a Borla catback. And all of the hardware to do the swap. Right now the plan is to pull the rears and meet half way. Like Nashville or KY/TN border. So do you think this is a fair straight up trade? We havent discussed that yet. But I want to know what Im looking at. Or should one of us pitch in some money. Let me know what you guys think.

Many moons ago I swapped my 3.73/Torsen stick axle out of my 2001 GT straight up for a 2001 Cobra axle w/ 3.55 gears and a stock diff. I had to go to Darlington, SC to pick it up, we did the swap out of his car in his driveway, I threw the IRS in the bed of my truck and drove back home.

I felt it was a fair trade.

That would be an ideal situation. I sold the other rearend I bought from you a few months ago so I could tint my windows. I had everything except the 31 spline axles and the exhaust. I like the 3.73's. And I like the Borla but Bassani is good also. This is very tempting.

Hey if your still looking for 10th anniv deep dish wheels check Hi-end auto. They have a Cobra with them on it. You may be able to get them from him. Maybe, maybe not. Just want to pass it on.

I personally think you would regret it. All of the smoothness of a daily driver goes away when you dump that IRS. I dread getting a mustang with a SRA after having an '04 Cobra with IRS. So smooth, so good at handling the curves, and really just makes the car a better car IMO. They would have to throw me cash on top of the deal, especially since you have a better IRS than what came in the earlier Cobras, and you are getting a stock rear end in return. Just my opinion.

Although, the Borla catback does sweeten the pot....Borla on an 03-04 is THE exhaust to have. No question.

I've already made up mine on going to an sra. I've been wanting to do it for awhile. I'm not much on carving corners. I'm more of a straight line guy. I have some decisions to make.

Guarantee that IRS is better in a straight line too.

Maybe not at the drag strip, if that's your thing. But on the street, IRS all day every day, and twice on Sunday. But If you are set on it, I feel like you could get a better trade locally without the travel, and maybe get one thats beefed up a little. You will drop hundreds of dollars in a SRA to toughen it up as well.

The reason I say what I say is because I have owned all of them. I have drag raced all of them, and the IRS was by far the best at all of them combined. Street manners, cornering, comfort, and at the strip. My car only made 500rwhp and it has the stock IRS with bushings and a brace, car was going 1.6 60 foots and 11.6x's in the 1/4 with no problems at all. Thats on an 18" drag radial.

Now if you plan on taking it to the strip and you want to side step the clutch at 5k...yeah go SRA. Otherwise, I'd never suggest it. Just trying to help. IRS is a LOT tougher than people say, especially with level 10 axles, a brace, and bushings.

I wouldn't trade strait up for a stock SRA your getting hosed. I sold my pretty much stock IRS (had a nice diff cover on it) for 1200 on Craigslist in the first day it was listed. Can you sell a stock SRA for 1200? Hell no you can't. There's a pretty well built SRA on this site for HALF what I got for my IRS and he still hasn't sold it. That's the route to go if you have the funds. Buy a nice built one then recoupe your money when you sell your stuff

Im not saying level 2, 5 or whatever they go up to are feesable lol. I wouldnt do upgraded axles personally. I know of several 10 second terminators with IRS's that don't break.

Level 5 axles are like $1500 and hold 900RWHP.
Level 2 axles are like $900 and hold 600 RWHP.

If I had an 03-04 Cobra, and was going to swap axles, id just save the money and get a built SRA if I were a drag racer only. Otherwise, bushings, brace it, let her rip. Its a badass car you have either way.

Yeah I know 28's wont hold up. I plan on upgrading to 31's, having it welded up and at some point having 9in ends put on. I dont have the extra cash to build one and then sell my irs. Its kind of my DD. If I could make a trade for a complete system with a good exhaust on it then I could tweek it as I go. But the better built then the better off I will be.

yea wastgate seen full boost was making probably 700 on a stock block spinning the slicks all the way down the track bouncing off the rev limiter and blew,that was a yr and 30k miles ago,theres a built kennebell cobra that makes 645 around here that i put 12 cars on with my puny stock motor,i beat the bag off my car its coverd in salt and snow daily driven peice of crap,heres a low 9 stock jy 3v motor with a lil boost http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q4MXp92f03E

I respect all cars, I'm not going to talk shit about a n/a car, supercharged vs turbo car crap. I Just made a statement that you will NOT put 12 cars on a 600+ rwhp mustang. Regardless of whether its supercharged, Nitrous'd, N/a, whatever. My car had 500 at the wheels, weighed a touch over 4k with me in it, and it ran well with just a ported and pullied eaton. The 03-04's aren't unbeatable...a lot of the people that own them just can't drive them. It's kinda like the GT500's...just some people with enough money to throw at a car but no driver skill. (For the most part).

And I would never argue the turbo vs. blower efficiency stuff. Clearly a turbo is more efficient...but that wasn't what was being talked about.

I respect your car Plated, I am sure it's fast. I just don't like people when they run their mouth and talk shit about other cars. We have a close car community here, and it just seemed like you think you are on top of everyone else because you have a cheap setup that's fast. Hey, whatever floats your boat man. Proud of you, and I like your car. Just try and show more respect to others and their cars, that's all.

Hopefully Rickers got his answer through all of this lol. Do what you want with the car, it's yours, and thats what matters. I just wouldnt do an even trade unless the SRA is beefed up some.

Regardless of whether its supercharged, Nitrous'd, N/a, whatever. My car had 500 at the wheels, weighed a touch over 4k with me in it, and it ran well with just a ported and pullied eaton. The 03-04's aren't unbeatable...a lot of the people that own them just can't drive them. It's kinda like the GT500's...just some people with enough money to throw at a car but no driver skill. (For the most part).

And I would never argue the turbo vs. blower efficiency stuff. Clearly a turbo is more efficient...but that wasn't what was being talked about.

I respect your car Plated, I am sure it's fast. I just don't like people when they run their mouth and talk shit about other cars. Because a full bolt on n/a 3v 4.6 gt makes about 340 or so to the wheels...add gears and it's a dead heat vs a stock cobra with a passenger. I know Chris, two very good friends of mine have these exact cars! One is an 05 with 4.30's full exhaust and intake, cams, and a tune. Other is a pullied, tuned, full exhaust 03 cobra. They have ran MANY times, same outcome everytime...cobra putting 10 cars on the gt...as it should. And my buddy driving the GT CAN FLAT OUT SHIFT! But there's no surprise since the cobra puts down 130 more to the wheels.

Easy buddy I didnt say your TRYING to fuck him its just my opinion that he would be coming out on the short end. I belive opinions/advice is what he started the thread for before it got all kinds of hijacked and I stick to my opinion that his IRS is the more valuable over a noisy stock SRA with nice exhaust but I guess if your throwing in all kinds of headlight, details, and hand jobs to sweeten the deal then whatever makes both of you happy. Yeah Im going SRA but not sure about what to do yet. There's a few parts offered in this thread that Id like to have. Im not sure if I want to put a detroit locker in it but Id like to have the axles. Ive heard the lockers have a lot of clicking on the street. But it would be nice to have it sitting around just in case. And Im also thinking about the adjustable shock. I know some like them and some dont. If I could pick up the axles all I would have to get would be a 31 spline spider gears. Id be close to where I want to be. Later down the road I want to have 9in ends put on with the 31 spline axles to go with it. Chris has always been more than fair to me when dealing with him. So I dont mind being more than fair to him. Im getting close to my decision. I knew this thread would start an argument but I thought it would be over ditching the IRS. But I never thought it would turn into this. Im not upset about Im enjoying all of this. Its gonna make for an interesting spring.

Tommy I had a locker in a street driven truck years ago and I liked it. You could hear it clicking in low speed turns like a parking lot, but not at higher speeds. The engagement can be harsh if you get in the throttle when you aren't exactly straight.

Thats awesome. Thank you. Im pretty much set on the sra. But after I get to where I want to be on a time slip then who knows I may end up wanting to go back to the irs. My girlfriend has an 03 V6 with a sra in it and it rides a million times better than mine. I its a 7.5 and shes at stock height. Its the one that sits on the side of the vet office during business hours. DSG. Mine is lowered so I think that ruins the ride for mine. Who knows the sra may make it so bad I might not be able to take it. But I dont think it will be that much different of a ride compared to mine right now.

I have a limited slip diff but Id have to change the spiders. I hear ya about the spool. Id love to have one but I couldnt deal with the turning problems. I dont know much about it but whats up with the wavetrac. Is that a spool or a locker. I havent looked into it at all.

i have no input on that. the locker isnt bad just a little noise when sharp turning going slow. i had all this stuff in a housing but i had a guy that needed a housing and all my control arms and stuff. i personaly will never take my irs back out again. but again i had everthing solid joints, spool, and it just rode and sounded like a total piece of crap. if your just going to a sa with good parts it wouldnt ride any diffrent then a gt i wouldnt think.

I would venture to say that your bushings are bad. My '04 rode really well with H&R springs, but its had all new bushings too.

Its not that bad. If the bushing were bad there would more issues than a rough ride. But it does have the notorius clunk. I have a set of stock springs I was going to put in it because it sits low and scrapes on speed bumps if you dont go over them right. I maybe exaggerating it some. Its not so bad I cant stand it. I just dont think the sra will be a huge difference.
