View Full Version : what would you buy

I know theres all sorts of different opinions here so I thought this may give some ideas. If you had 10,000 to spend on a car what would you buy. Its a toy. 2 seater or more. This is not something you have to have. Just a toy for you to enjoy. It needs to have heat and wipers and cant be strictly a race car.

I'd put it down on a loan for a yellow '03 Cobra...

But seriously, just a street car or would it occasionally see the drag strip/autocross? First cars that popped into my head with a $10k budget would be a C5 6 spd or an S2000. Both 2 seater rwd nice weather fun cars that handle awesome for back roads and would be cheap as winter hits.

wow... first post. I think you were reading my mind. I am looking for c5 6speed. Unless something else pops up.

They're a lot of fun, before my Cobra I had a cam/full exhaust C5Z. Try to get a '99-up if you can. It's pretty easy to find them with decent miles for $12-13k, and cash talks. I think you'll be able to get one within your budget.

whats the difference on the 99 and up and the 97 98. I have to admit as long as its the 97 or up and a 6 speed Im fine with it. I know the early ones didnt have rock guards for the a/c compressor but other than that I have not heard any real negitives. I am trying to stay under 113,000 miles. I have looked at old muscle like 60's mustangs 70's cutlass, and chevelle. bmw m3, lightnings. ( I know nothing about the lightning)

BuckeyeAlex

Mainly PCM differences if you're going to mod it or anything. I know for sure the '98 F-body cars are different than the '99-02, but with the Corvettes it may be different. If it's just a driver then a '97-98 is fine. If you haven't looked around yet, Corvetteforum is a great place for classifieds and info on them.

been all over corvetteforum but every thing is to far away. I thought about taking a plane ride or having something delivered though. well see. I would really like to keep it at my price. Theres quite a few on c/l but most are automatics in my range. I have driven a few and the auto is fun and has a crazy down shift but not much play room. It seems like your either cruising or punching it and its passing 80. I figuer at least with a gear box I can have fun and keep it under 100.

Honestly, the first thing that popped into my head was a F150 lighting. I had one a few years back and it was a ton of fun, and I had a decent truck when needed as well. You could pick up a 99-00 lightning for right around your budget for sure. Ported blower, pulley, intake and exhaust and tune and the truck will run really nice. I'd also consider an older classic stang as well, fun at car shows, and fun tinkering on them over time. Just my opinion.

sean
11-03-2012, 09:36 AM
I have also looked into a lightning and older mustang. I dont know a thing about the lightning and have never even been in one. I really would like a stick too. Anyone knows anything about the lightning feel free to educate me.

The Lightnings get terrible gas milage, but it would be a great compromise of a toy and a useful truck for house/car projects. It'd be about as useful as a Corvette in the winter though. I think it'd be a great compliment vehicle to your 5.0 though. The newer you can get, the better. I'm thinking the 99-00 trucks are 360 hp and the 01-04s are 390, but that might not be right. Other than the power differences, I think it's just wheels and headlights that changed throughout the years? I'm sure somebody will correct me, I've never owned one but have been in a few from just a pulley and exhaust to fully built and they run good for what they are.

I just looked through the classifieds on LS1tech and if you wanted to raise your budget to around $16,000 you could have a pretty cool 2001-2002 Vette. I drove my brother in laws 01 M6 convertible some this summer and really liked it. GMC Syclone( if you can find one) or a Turbo Buick would be on my list also in that price range.

I will play devils advocate here....why the hell did you get rid of a cheaper nice driver Mach 1 that apparently drove and looked like a sub 100k mile car just to maybe go get a vette or some other toy? What was it about the Mach 1 that bored you or that you didn't like? You wants seem to be all over the place. 2 seater vette, lower mileage 99-01 cobra, lightning, I mean these are all on opposite spectrums. Just trying to help you figure out what you really want, I mean $10k is a lot to drop on a "toy" if you don't have a specific want. I personally see no use in two 2 door sports cars. I'd buy a truck lol.

Probably couldn't buy one for 10,000 but could come close to building one if you had the car already! Coyote swapped Fox!

the mach had 166,xxx miles and I didnt want to have something that in 10,000 miles would be pretty much worthless. It was a fun car but I like to have things that if need be I can sell pretty fast for a decent dollar amount. I came up with 10,000 in a matter of days and I like to be able to do that incase something comes up. I am really leaning toward a c5 and have a few really good leads on some. I have had so many cars I am pretty much just bored with everything in my range. I have been playing in the vettes here at work and I like them and have always wanted the c5. I have never been in a lightning though. I am not looking for a usefull car either. Just a toy. Something will catch my eye and be the right car or truck and I will buy it. Thats why I wanted all your opinions on what you have had, old or newer that you had fun with.

thank you. I drove a 2003 corvette that was an automatic home from work last night just to make sure I didnt want an automatic..... I dont want an automatic. It was ok but the down shifts were either weak or out of control. Highway was nice when you hit it but lower speeds was very weak. It was a nice carf and ran as it should.

6.0 gto? Ram air trans am?

If I didnt have the mustang a gto would be a good choice. I Have looked at the camaro ss and trans am and dont really care for it for some reason. I wish I did. Theres some nice ones out there.

Had a few good suggestions that I didnt think of too. A datsun scarab, rat rods

HAvent been able to find a 6.0 gto either.

ok, I will tell what what I would do with the money. I am indecisive, I like may cars...and I have a hard time deciding on what to put my money towards at times as well. So I understand where you are coming from.

First of all, you have the car I want to get in the next year...a new edge 5.0 (but I will for sure throw a blower on it for weekend fun). So you have step one complete.

I always will have a non mustang daily, whether its a truck, or a sporty sedan..as long as its not a complete gas hog (18-20mpg approx.).

With the extra cash, I would go one of several ways. One options would be to get a classic car to cruise in. I have always been a fan of the 60's mustangs, and also the late 60's F100's. You can get a NICE 66-69 F100 v8 4 speed manual truck for that coin. The mustang, may be a little harder in that price range.

Also, I would really think about getting a SUPER NICE stock low mileage fox body. Those ALWAYS fetch a good price, and sell quick if you want/need to. Most people are not a fan of fox bodies because they get the old rusty ragged out on their last leg ones and they get a bad rap. The clean, garaged, well kept, low mileage ones can be extremely nice.

Third option, for some reason I love the Mazdaspeed 6's. They are getting cheap, ton of aftermarket for them, manual AWD turb and a LOT less maintenance and $$$ than Audi's and other import AWD's. I really had a hard time getting the Sport Fusion over a Mazdaspeed6.

Ok, I am done. I like this game though.

I retract my previous suggestions.

Buy up as many easy flips as you can over winter, then have about $15k to play with in the spring and have a lot better options. If you look in the right places, that'll get you a C5 Z06 or Terminator.

sean
11-05-2012, 01:20 PM
lol you act like I will have whatever I buy by spring..... My car add will set in and it will be for sale soon enough.

Cobraman302 I appreciate the input. It is fun. Not knowing what I want and looking for the right deal that just grabs me. Cutlass to corvette. lol Who knows. Theres a frc c5 in georgia I really like.
