My brother and I went to Thunder Valley Precision rifle range this past Sunday for some long range shooting. The range is from 100 yards to 1 mile. They do tactical shoots with targets ranging from 276 to 1165 yards. I hit 5 out of the 16 targets, 4 shooting positions with 4 targets each position, you and your partner have 8 minutes at each position.

This was the most fun I've ever had shooting a gun, even though my score was low. I highly recommend giving it a try if you have any interest in long range shooting.

TVP is near Coshocton, OH, it's about 180 miles from Dayton. I was shooting my Savage model 12, 300 WSM for the shoot, afterward I used my 50 BMG to shoot to 1000 yards and to 1 mile. I can hit at 1000 yards, but missed the mile target by about 5-6', some high, some low.

Here are some pics, for reference, the big white squares at 1 mile are 4'x4'.

F'in bad ass! I've wanted to go there when u get a 308. I have a 22-250 but I think at 1000 yards it will be affected by wind way to much.

I don't have a gun that will reach that far, but that looks like so much fun!

Buddy has a 22-250 that is affected by wind at 1 oclock ALOT at 300 yards.

I really need to go to this place,it looks absolutly badass. Might get some 338 action out there.

I can only stretch out to 350 yards at my dads place, but thats not to shabby.

hitting at 1000 yards and only missing 5-6' at 1 mile is not bad at all IMO! Especially if I understand right and you just showed up and gave it a try. sounds fun.

Well, I have equipment to shoot that far, but not a lot of experience. My brother and I went last year and shot at 600, 1000, and 1600 yards, they didn't have the range out to 1 mile at that time. TVP is learning experience like the track and/or dyno, you have to go there to find your shortcomings.

Last year I took my Remmy 700 in .308, but I had a cheap scope and a flat scope base, I ran out of adjustment on my scope at 350 yards. This year I took a Savage 300 wsm, 20 moa base, and a quality scope, and had no problem reaching a target at 1165 yards.

As far as the .50, it has a Leupold mark 4 and Barrett BORS system, it had no problem reaching out to a mile, and the rifle has a built in 27 moa rail.

So I didn't just wing it, I had knew what it would take to do it, it's just hard to get up there as often as I would like. I work a lot of Saturday's, and they don't do the tactical shoots as often on Sundays. They are going to have another tactical (intimidator) shoot the weekend of Bowling Green (NMRA), Oct 7th, if any of you guys want to try it out.

Also, there is an app for smartphones called "Shooter" that is a fantastic ballistic's calculator, and is a good deal at $10. We used that app for our ballistic solutions, and it worked very well.

Here is a link to TVP's website, this has the season schedule and it tells you the distance's you will shoot at each position.

The 338 Lapua is a fantastic round, and will have no problem reaching 1 mile, hitting at a mile is more difficult than it sounds, but I guarantee you will have a blast trying.

Me and a few friends went back up today, and had a blast. I finally hit the 2' steel gong at 1 mile. I had been wanting to hit at a mile for quite a while. The wind was heavier today, which made long range hits more difficult, but that's how it goes at long range. I finally was able to play with my AR/EOtech setup out there, and I was able to hit the 12" sq. gong at 600 yards with only 3x power. One of my buddies brought his AR/slide fire setup, that was a blast to play with also.

Replicobra and I went back yesterday and shot the intimidator course again. My score definitely improved, I went from 5 hits, to 9 hits, and 7 of them first round strikes (your allowed 3 shots at each target). The furthest target I shot at was 1650 yards, the furthest I hit was 1048 yards. That place is an insane amount of fun.

I've been wanting to go there for some time. Like everything else getting a free weekend seems impossible. I've never shot anything over 1000yds, we used to do that alot in the corps with our M1s. I don't know if I could push my SASS much beyond that.

Oh yea, Woodbury Outfitters is right downtown Coshocton and they used to have a ton of killer ammo deals.

We weren't able to get to Woodbury on this trip, but they do usually have a good selection.
