Hey guys we just picked up a 98 accord for the ole lady to commute to and from work with. Car has 130k miles nice car. The car jumps when coming to a complete stop 2-1 shift. Other than that it's shifts like butter. I have heard this is a common issue. Just wondering if anyone has experienced this or know a good place reasonably priced that won't try an sell me a trans/trans rebuild if it's just a sensor or something stupid. Thanks in advance!!

Explain the jumping.

L4 or V6?

When was fluid last changed?

Castol ATF for Honda/Toyota every 20k miles.

TV cable may need adjusted.

I just downloaded the FSM's for my 96 Accord and was about to go through them.

No records on last change. The fluid is brownish looking. And when you come to a stop just as it's almost stopped and into 1st it's like a rough shift from 2nd to 1st gear. Kinda like a jerkish feeling if ya will.

It did have a check engine light on though but I just reset it so I didn't have to look at it lite up but didn't bother reading the codes 1st. It did say 3 codes. Light hasn't popped back on yet again but only been 60 miles since reset.

Trans. A lot of general shops outsource the transwork through Milt's.

Change the fluid first, 2.5 quarts IIRC. So just buy 3 from Autozone and get a point reward, 5 points = $20 or three more quarts of tranny fluid!

Thankfully it is not the dreaded 6 cylinder, 98-05 V6 trannys ARE JUNK!

What were the codes?

EGR Low flow is common, that will also kill the O2 sensor in 50-60k miles.

It is easy to remove the plate to clean the ports, just have to get the fuel rail out of the way. In the mean time there is an easy fix.....until it cools off so I can work on the car.

Unfortunatley I didn't bother reading the codes before I erased them with my scanner. I was in a hurry and just hit erase real quick figuring it was probably gonna come back on again anyways. There is however a vacume line coming from down around the trans area up to the top side of the trans that they put a golf tee in. He said his mechanic had looked everywhere but cannot find anything this plugs into. Not sure if that has anything to do with it or not. I cant see where it's coming from but def somewhere from the trans area.

Also been reading and it seems like everyone is saying to use only honda premium fluid only from the dealership.

Jerry's is on 131 across from the lawn equipment place near the high school.

IIRC = If I Recall Correctly

Honda ATF and MTF has been changed over the past 15 years.

96 Accord 204k miles
91 Civic 292k miles
95 Civic (RIP) 241k miles
94 Civic (RIP) 193k miles

No tranny issues and this is the fluid I used in them, bottle has slightly changed lately.

I've never dealt with a transmission shop, but do rebuild Honda MANUAL trannys as a side job.

I won't build that transmission but I will give you a fair price to r&r it and do it right. I can pull it for you to get it rebuilt or to put a used unit in, either way. Yes you need honda fluid or you can use dex3 with a lubeguard additive to change it.
