HAMILTON —
An Army soldier, the son of a Hamilton family, died in Afghanistan this week.

Staff Sgt. Robert A. Massarelli, 32, was killed in Kandahar on Sunday, June 24, his mother confirmed Thursday night.

He was a 1998 graduate of East Kentwood High School, in Kentwood, Mich., and the son of Pat and Mary (Renneker) Massarelli. He has two brothers, Mike and Ben Massarelli.

His mother declined further comment.

I did not see anything on the Patriot Guard site for him. If the family requests the PG I will go stand the flag line to honor him.

Truly another sad, sad loss. It's loss enough when troops are killed or MIA in the line of duty when being supported and given the ability to fulfill their misions without DC political agendas and stipulations for confrontation. Its sadder even when politicians 'tie troop's arms behind their backs' and they fall in the line of duty because of limited ability to protect themselves or resolvethe mission they have been assigned. You either go in and do the job and get out, or you don't go in. Go in, get out. That should be the limit of the politician's say in the matter. Let the military experts resolve how to get it done and get out with minimum troop loss. Any loss is a tragedy. But loss due to politics is the worst tragedy of all.

I agree bring them home. Can't fight a battle when hobbled by your leaders in Washington.

Nice. Thanks for sharing. Hopefully we don't have to do that very often. Those escorts go pretty slow. It is tough to ride with tears in your eyes.

After each mission, we all leave saying that we hope we never ride for another solder killed. We are group of people who wish we did not need to exist.
