View Full Version : Removing tint from tails?

Okay so I just picked up another set of tails and a third brake light. They are tinted but they didn't do a good job. I've had a couple people tell me to use xylene(spelling) and it'll rub right off without hurting the plastic. Or would my best bet to be just wetsand then buff em out? I plan on going back to the tinted tails but I want them to look good and not like some ricer got a hold of them.

there's a few oven cleaners that will remove it i'm not sure off the top of my head but i use to use it on model cars all the time totally removes all the paint just spray on let bubble up and wash off

See the problem with buffing them out will be the way the tails layer out. Will be a PITA to get into the edge on them. I remember reading somewhere about a chemical that will pull it right off without damaging the plastic. I know Xylene is one of those types of chemicals that wont hurt plastic. But it might be another.

again i'd try a lil easy off i use to use this one back in the day it was called Mr. Muscle oven cleaner and it would strip a plastic model down to the bare plastic even on an old model with 5 layers of paint 5 min. take the hose to it and it would be like it was new again. I'd think the tails would be stronger than car models.

I know they changed the chemical makeup of a lot of those oven cleaners a few years back due to people burning the shit outta themselves(wife included when she was a teen). Its worth a shot though. I just dont want to ruin these tails.

Just wetsand and buff em. What you can't get with the pad just do the crevases by hand. They'll look like a million bucks.

Im going to try to find a good chemical to try first. Once I sand them theres no going back on buffing them out. I dont think I could get them shiney enough in the bends to my liking after sanding all this junk off. Hmm, maybe I should buy some of those tiny buffing pads for a cordless drill.

I do headlights all the time and they turn out killer... I also buffed the back end of an '02 GT recently and didn't have any trouble with the lights...

Im not worried about the buffing part. I can buff anything and make it shine. The tint is sprayed on pretty thick. So that means there will be a lot of sanding and then to get the scratches out and to get it shining like new Im going to have to get the buffer in that groove and my high speed buffer isnt small. Ive already used 3M Finesse It II and it didnt touch the tint.

Believe it or not, finger nail polish remover works AWESOME. Just got it all off my third brake light. Too bad the light has seen better days and has the sun fade/cracks in it. After using that I used a little Finesse It and it shined up great. Can stlll see the cracks in it though. Thinking of using a lower grit sandpaper like 800 and sanding the hell outta it to see if I can get rid of the cracks.

rubbing alchole works great. Worked on my CBR600 the previous owner tinted the headlite. I got it all off then buffed the lense with a 9 doller buffing kit from PepBoys. Came with 6 pads and drill mount all you do is spray them with water and they work better then the high dollar lense restore kits.
