I went down to VIR for the weekend for the SVT Superfest and to run the full course (what a phenominal track!).

Lee Holman (yes, THE Lee Holman of Holman & Moody) was there with this little jewel. If sex had wheels, this would be it. I felt dirty just taking the photo!

This is NOT a kit car, or even a late model. This is the REAL thing - Holman-Moody built GT40. Don said I could buy it right then for $750,000 - I asked him if he took credit :eek:

and if you feel dirty for taking the picture i won't tell you what i just did with it then.....

Lee didn't make mention of any significant history. He told me it was built later (same blueprints) for him to play around with. They ones with the original racing history are more like $7million. He laughed at that saying they have been bent and straightened too many times to be run hard....so he built another he would be safe in. He did mention that the vibrations to the head from the "Gurney bubble" (head area) gave him vertigo. The rear gear is a quick-change. 180 mph as it sat, flip the gear set over and it was good for 240.

IIRC the 40 in GT40 meant 40" tall before the Gurney Bubble was added.

Yep.

The Gurney Bubble was added because Dan Gurney at 6'3" was way taller than most drivers of the era and didn't fit in the car.

What a monster !

Several years ago (2004 IIRC), a friend of a friend happened to be the truck driver for Ford's SVO program. He was hauling a new GT40, the old magazine car Super Stallion (anyone remember that one ?) and he had prototype modular 5.0 engine with him.

Within a 1/2 hour, we managed to get about 40-50 of our car buddies to for an impromptu private car show!

Here's pics of our little show!
