Let me preface this by saying this thread is more to help me out, as I will have a million questions. Long story short, I bought the car when I was 17, with my whole life savings. It was an awesome DD, but has been parked in the garage sinc Dec. 2010. I am too attached to part with her and am finally getting to the point to where I am not afraid to tear into things, learning as I go along.

The build is going to be a slow one and on a tight budget. My ultimate goal is to have a fun driver and something that I can participate in a few UMTR races. I have been collecting parts and tools as I go and still need a lot to finish. (The wife has to sign my permission slip for everything I buy)

Here is the car when I was 17, with some sweeeeet American Racing wheels lol.

Last day the car was driven with the v6.

Engine and trans pulled.

Freshly powdercoated intake!

http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n6/filluptheday/IMAG0209.jpg How she sits now.

Plans are pretty basic. Using the shortblock and going carb'd. I want to go with a tfs1 cam, 1.6 roller rockers, 650 dp, msd dist and 6al. I have been looking at both Astro Performance and Promotion trans, I want to stick with a t5. Plan on going with an 8.8 with 4.10s. As far as fuel, I want to sump the stock tank, use a Holley Blue fp, and fully braided line.

I am by no means a mechanic, this is going to be a huge learning experience full of trials and errors. I will have a million questions and any help and advice is greatly appreciated.

Good start if your going carb'd this shouldn't be hard to do,while u have motor out put a kmember and lighten that thing up a bit, that body style is slightly on the heavy side, have fun with it!

I am, I have a PA racing k-member with perches. I have been doing my homework for the most part. I don't think it will be too tough. Just a lot of random questions. Such as, can I use my v6 t5 bellhousing with an 87-93 t5.

Dont sump the tank, just have a fitting welded to the sending unit, using the stock fuel tank/pump/etc. Put a plug and a clamp over the old return... Dont even have to remove the old fuel lines.... done.

Have a return welded into the side of the tank. Use a regulator to exact your fuel pressure and make sure it's a return style to return extra fuel to the tank.

Simple. And you dont have extra fuel accessories hanging LOWER than your tank to potentially scrape the ground. No high dollar fuel pump needed, and no money spent on a fuel pump ;) Just have to get the filter and stuff for it and mount that somewhere under there.

Also, If I am not mistaken, the v6 T5's also had the slightly longer input shafts as the 94-95 5.0 T5's did. You'll need a 94-95 bellhousing. If you can measure the distance from the end of input shaft to the case (not the retainer), I can measuere a fox T5 and compare.

Make sure your control arms fit the k member and have a good range of motion! Been there done that on K members that supposedly fit stock arms! Got rid of that one and ended up buying Eddie's (blowpastyou) old AJE k member

I have gt40p heads also, I ended up getting some MSD plug wires that I had to make they have 90 degree angles on the boots then they clear the headers.

slow86fiveoh
02-03-2013, 09:58 AM
Dump those headers and get a set of bbk shorties they clear all the plugs really well I had to use 1 90 degree boot

98stangv6
02-03-2013, 05:44 PM
Yeah, I think I will have to go another route with the headers. I am trying to keep it as much of a budget build as possible, I will keep my eye out for some BBK. I also decided to pull the water pump off and go with one that turns the same direction as the crank pulley since I won't be running ac or power steering. I hope to swap out the rear end and have the engine and trans bolted in by next weekend.

98stangv6
02-11-2013, 02:57 PM
Well I went two steps forward and one step back. I swapped the headers out for some Ford Racing P headers, much better clearance, but my overkill Roush wires still won't work. Swapped the water pump out for one that turns clockwise.

Got the King Cobra clutch in and oe replacement flywheel. Got the motor and trans in, but made another rookie mistake. The 7qt oil pan is not going to cut it. Starter won't fit and clutch cable won't go through the bellhousing. So I need to find a stock oil pan.

The billet alternator bracket is giving me a headache, It clears the waterpump pulley, however it's too close for comfort as you can see in the pics. I also think it will be in the way of the water neck coming off of the intake. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Hope to have the 8.8 next weekend and work out some of the problem areas. It's been a good learning experience, but it seems like it's been a lot of work for a 14 second car.

I still need a stock oil pan and starter if anyone has them for cheap. I would like to use some of my stock gauges, but don't know much about wiring. Is it possible to use my stock tach, oil pressure, etc?

It looks like that oil pan has kick outs, if that's so that is the real problem with the pan.
You can get the correct high capacity pan from Moroso or even Ford Racing.
Does the engine have a high volume oil pan? If so you may want to avoid a stock pan because them pumps can suck the pan dry and cause major issues?

98stangv6
04-15-2013, 09:50 AM
I just put a standard volume pump back in. I have a stock pan now.

98stangv6

I was starting to think the jack stands were rusted to the floor, but I made some progress the past few days and she got to touch the ground. I got the stock gas tank and 7.5 rear end out. I got the 8.8" in, stock oil pan on, drive shaft, figured out the alternator bracket, etc. Next up with fuel system and wiring (not looking forward to either).

Problems I am running into:
1) I want to attempt to use as many stock gauges as possible, but don't know where to start.

2) My stock v6 T5 clutch cable will not hold into my 95 v8 clutch fork where it hooks in.

3) I need more money!

4) Wiring sucks.

5) Hoping my stock v6 radiator will keep it cool.

Well, she is running and drove around the block a few times. I only caught one plug wire boot on fire!

I wasn't able to find anything to tap into for my exciter wire, so it's on a push start right now. I think it's due to the PATS system. The theft light flashes constantly. Anyone else had this problem?

My timing is wayyyy off, time to tear the duraspark apart to see which reluctor arms it has and change the springs. Are there any duraspark gurus on here?

I hope to get it more road worthy this weekend and I will post some videos. It sounds a little bit different from the old V6.

Wat u wanna know bout a duraspark dizzy? Pull the Jesus clip an reluctor ring an see wat advance u got it on. If it has the 10L setting use it an set for 35* total timing an don't use vacuum advance. Should get u 14-16* base timing. If don't have 10L setting weld gap to. 357

98stangv6
08-26-2013, 08:05 PM
Well I tore apart the duraspark tonight. Welded up the slot to .361". This should put it in the area of an 8L. I left the lighter factory spring on one side and put the Mr. Gasket very light spring on the other. I am afraid the full timing will come it too quickly with both Mr. Gasket springs, they are extremely light tension. I am going to start out running around 16* of initial timing, so I should have about around 32* of total timing and I will work up from there. Hopefully I am correct and this makes a noticeable difference.

I've been driving the car around quite a bit. Still need to find an air cleaner that will let me use the stock hood.

Car pulls pretty well, but I still don't think it's running as good as it could. I have been learning a lot about carbs and trying my best, but am stumped right now. The car has a bad hesitation/stumble at low rpms while just cruising around. If I am at cruising speed, say in 4th gear, under 2500 rpms and attempt to easily accelerate, it's bad. I can't tell if the car is loading up, not getting enough fuel, etc. If I give it more gas it starts to pull a lot better after getting over 3k rpms.

Carb is brand new QuickFuel Slayer 600 cfm with vacuum secondary. Holley Blue electric fuel pump and regulator at 6.5 psi. Unsure what to try next.

Haven't updated in quite some time. I've found a few deals on some used junk and made a few changes. Bolted on a set of old Trick Flow Twisted Wedge 170 heads and switched to a new 650cfm mechanical secondaries carb. My main focus this winter has been drivetrain. My goal is to drive to the track and run on sticky tires without worrying about breaking. I acquired a TKO600 with CF dual friction clutch. I am also upgrading to a set of Moser 31 spline axles and 31 spline trac lok.

I haven't updated this in awhile and the car collected dust for awhile. Watching Craig's progress, hanging out at TSR, and attending OSCR really got me motivated. The last time the car ran, NA and with a carb, it ran 13.1 and I wasn't happy. I parked it and started collecting parts. Since then, I've wanted to redo everything and do it right, within my means and still on a budget. (My detective salary doesn't go too far).

The TKO600 is in. The rear is now welded tubes, 31 spline, factory springs with one coil cut, and Metco upper now lower control arms. It's still a sbe 302 with an old set of TFS 170s and tfs1 cam. It's now fuel injection with an Aeromotive A100 pump and Siemen Deka 80s (hoping to run E85). I went with a Chinabay hot side, made the cold side, Treadstone IC, and a small Borg S366. I've really spent time getting unnecessary weight out of the car. I went with a factory replacement fox body manual rack and used a bump steer kit made by Maximum Motorsports to keep my SN95 A arms (tubular aren't in the budget yet). Converted to Strange coil overs up from with single adjustable struts.

Sticking to the budget, I'm using Megasquirt MS3x and doing a Raspberry Pi dash. This has been the biggest learning curve and the hardest for me. I am currently building the harness and learning as I go. I want to do sequential injection so I am now switching to a hall effect distributor and crank trigger. It's all foreign to me and I get lost pretty quickly. Thankfully my buddy Brad at TSR has kept me going and been super helpful. It's a slow process with major growing pains, but I'm getting there.

I still have a long way to go, but the goal is to go 10s this summer. It's definitely not breaking any records or fast by today standards by any means, but it should be a fun little budget street car. Next we split the block and have a reason to go with a Dart SHP block.
