Cobra as a Daily Driver ?

I'll be in the market for a new (used) daily driver soon.

How well would a 96-98 Cobra workout for long commutes (70 miles/day) ?

What MPG do they "normally" get on the highway ?

I drove my cobra every day. have to use the good gas in it. I think I was getting low to mid 20s on the highway.

Its got a live axle rear end and is based on a car from the 70's....but it could be worse.

I drove a 95 daily for three years. Decent rubber some weight in the trunk and minimal driving ability will get you thru 95 percent of the snow we see. Different motor than your prospect but i pulled down 24 average. 3.08 ls rear end.

Now this may be considered a little apples to oranges here BUT... I drove my 2005 GT to/from work 28 miles each day all winter one season. I put a pair of Bridgestone Blizzaks on the back and two bags of sand in the trunk and had little issue in the snow. In fact I was amazed at how well it went with those tires on it. With the factory Pirelli tires I once got caught in a dusting and almost never got home, seriously. Its all a matter of how you drive the car and if you are used to driving a rear wheel drive as opposed to an SUV or FWD vehicle, IMHO. Enjoy regardless. The tire makes the difference.

I flew to tampa fl and lived mine up. Spent a few weeks playing in florida and drove it home. It was a nice ride and I was very comfortable the whole way.

I can't drive ANY Mustang in the snow, makes me feel sick to do that to one, I like my cars spotless so any salt is bad idea..... as far as a driver, hell... I drive my fox anywhgere I can, and when I had my 94 Cobra did that too, I love driving my car.. gotta use em!!

Drove my 96 everywhere . Went on many a vacation in the car to daytona beach , tennessee , and texas. Car was very comfortable .

Hell back in 88-92 I use to daily drive a 67 Camaro in the winter. It had a 2.73 ls diff and a M4 and with actual snow tires that car would go anywhere. I lived in Taylor Mill and work in Mason. Fortunately I had a I6 for a motor and it didn't cost me an arm and a leg for fuel.

Blizzacks truly do make a night\day difference in the snow. I had a new '00 GT that was my DD and when I made the switch during the winter it made so much difference. Side note, my brother has had a Mustang as his DD since '90 when he got his new 5.0 LX. Has traded in on new ones in '96, '01, '05 and now his '11. All GT cars so I have to give him more credit with his driving than I want to. ;)

I'm sure it would do fine. That being said, I don't drive my LX in snow ever or even rain if I can help it, but thats just me. I always have a beater for winter or bad weather. To me what makes a bad daily driver of a "hot rod" type car is just drive ability, too big a cam, too stiff or soft suspension, race type tires, lack of creature comforts A/C, pwr this and that. Sounds like a mildly warmed over Cobra would be a blast!

Back in the day I had a almost daily driver V-8 pinto panel wagon, carbs out the hood (bad in rain), no wipers (also bad in rain), big convereter, manual valve body, no A/C, no power anything, 4.62 gear and spool, ladder bars with a noisy floater, huge bias tires on the back and tiny radials on the front, roll bar you had to climb over to get in, hotter than heck, loud as crap, etc...

But at 20 years old I loved every minute of it, I miss that car...

I drove my 97 year round, except when it snowed. 60 miles round trip to work, tons of trips to Pittsburgh (290 miles), and anywhere else I needed to go.

I usually averaged about 20-23...depending on how heavy my foot was. You have to resist that temptation to keep the mileage respectable.

I had my 98 Cobra in 6 inches of snow with Nitto drag radials on the rear, and I have a witness.(LOL) I didn't have any problems other than you have to plan for your stops. You can get 20 miles to a gallon pretty easy, and the cars are comfortable. Just don't put a stiff ass clutch in it.
