Id try to find a netbook. We picked my 10 year old daughter up a Acer for 175 last year and she loves it.

I have one I'd like to get $300 for. It's a Toshiba I bought a year or two ago, I'll get the specs when I get home.

I got a Toshiba Satellite 15.6 inch screen, 3GB Ram with a 250 Hard drive, bought it in 2009, and had a new hard drive put in it towards the end of 2010 and have the receipts for everything...ill take $250 for it

We bought a Acer Aspire One from Wal-Mart for like $250 for my my wife just so she could throw it into her purse. It's like a net book but it runs Windows and you can load and use it just like your normal PC. The actual Net book runs Linux and there isn't allot too them and not allot of memory.

If your really looking for cheap laptop for a kid, I would find one off Craigslist or something. People are all the time selling there older laptops this time of year (tax returns) and buying new ones. There are plenty out there.

My last Acer lasted nearly 5 years bouncing in a truck every day. Nothing but good to say about them for an internet and music computer.
