I am looking to buy a mig welder for my home shop. Does anyone have any recommendation? Hoping not to spend alot of $$$$ on this. I do have a 220 out in the shop.

I suggest whatever you do get a machine that is blue. Everything I use on a daily basis is a miller. I have tried those century and CH welders on several occasions and they are crap. Tig would be the exception some older tigs are durable and consistant such as airco or hobart. Hobart would be the second best name in welders but if you are jsut wanting to weld small parts and exhaust a older miller sidekick is a great machine I paid $350 for mine used and had to put a $40 capacitor in it. Most people think the welds were done on a 220 machine but practice makes perfect.

I work as an industrial fabricator. I have a Miller 180 at home and work with bigger Miller welders at work. If I was going to buy a new one I would go for one that can either run 110 or 220. If you are working on frames you need at least 220 to really get the penetration, but if its just sheet metal and small projects then 110 is just fine.

I have a Hobart 187 it has Miller parts through out It is Great. We have Millers at work I would stick with Miller/Hobart products Hobart 140-187 are great hobby machines.

Millermatic 211 auto set. Does 110v/220 1phase and is spool gun ready for aluminum. Great machine and it still fits in the trunk of my car in a pinch, plus makes anyone who can read look like a pro welder.

Unless your shopping @ harbor freight there are only two brands out: miller and lincoln. Miller makes hobarts and weldmarks, lincoln makes century. The machines listed down the product lines have lesser transformers and capacitors which reduce the duty cycle(amount of continuous run time).

I have to agree with Alan, for Mig and flux core wire, buy something blue. I personally prefer one in red for stick and tig.
