This is a long winded post so please bear with me. Well this has been a very difficult decision to make. I have been in the fire service for 20 years. It has been an amazing journey. I have seen the highest of high and the lowest of low for the people in my community. I am currently a shift Captain. I have 2 Lts and 7 Fire/Paramedics/EMTs on my unit. We are a family. That has been the hardest part telling them I am leaving. I will miss being a part of their lives every third day and beyond.
I feel I have been a part of something special. I came in and helped transform a fully volunteer service into a career professional department. I can look back and see my fingerprints thru out the department and its changes.
I have learned so much. And probably the most rewarding has been learning about mentoring others. I have seen many come and go and turn out to be absolutely the finest public servants they can be. It makes me feel I have done something to better the world I am in. It brings a tear to my eye thinking of all of you and how proud I am of you. It has been a pleasure serving the residents of my community and thank them for the opportunity to have done so.
I am going to the private sector. I am going to be a medic for an off shore drilling company. The pay and benefits will be a welcome thing for my family. I will be on a 21 on and 21 day off schedule. So my family and I will be making some big transitions. I do this for them because their daddy cares that much for them. What was once a honorable way to make a fair wage and fair benefits gets tougher every year. For those that argued that the public sector made as much if not more than private sector. My only response is .
And please pray for the crew that has to be stuck out at sea for 3 weeks straight with me. BWAHAHAHA!
