Well I picked up a digital 6 MSD box several years ago. When I got it I went to hook it up and it wouldnt fire. Another story all together. I fugred I would get it fixed at some point. I called MSD a few weeks ago and they said I needed to request an RMA # and send it in. They said they would check it out and call with a price to repair and I could decide whatI wanted to do. I sent it in 3 weeks ago. I get 3 emails this weekend that it is finished and on its way back. WTF? I call today and the guy says oh, there was no charge. I said what was wrong with it and what was fixed then? He looks and says the re was a $5.00 charge and they couldnt fix it. I ask why was I told that it could be repaired then??? I paid to ship it there and now nothing after I was told it could be fixed and I would be informed during these repairs what was wrong and how much. He didnt even respond. I was reading on Yellowbullet the same stuff right after I sent it in and I guess it was right. I wont be spending any more of my money on msd products.

Thats sucks, I had to send my box in for repair and was told that i would be called and given a quote. No quote the fixed it and charged me 60 bucks to fix plus the 30 it cost me to ship it.

You know what they say about MSD:
My
Spark
Disappeared
Their products are not what they used to be.

I have an old 6A that is pushing 20 years. Still going strong. I was thinking about upgrading it to digital....maybe I will hold onto it

No dont buy the digital stuff, I happen to have a broken D6 they cant or wont fix also. I think they're scraping them all together for the Grid setup.

I had 4 digi 6's in 3 years that failed, some used, one new. None could be repaired......The new one was 3 months old, didnt work out of the box. I sent it in and 4 months later it magically should up with a note saying it was not repairable. I called and spent over 2 hours on the phone explaining that their warrenty was 1 year, and the box was 3 months old and keep it for over 4 months. They really really piss me off, but I have another msd product on the car. It sucks because they have the market covered like wal-mart.

Did msd switch hands or something drastic? Why would they all of a sudden start putting out sub par products?

That is weird because I've always had good luck with MSD products especially the distributors. Our 67 Camaro went through 2 Mallory distributors (one actually locked up and shot out of the motor into my hand  ) in 5 years and the MSD still looks new. That was back in the 90's though

Our 67 has a 6T with a Rev module and 2 step and it is over 20 years old as well.

Typically after a company stops making a product they will only keep spare parts to last through the warrenty period and then won't support them anymore. Not sure if that is part of this problem or not.
Still I have a 6AL that was new in 2005. It lasted 4 years in my car (interior) and then stopped working. Found a Capacitor lead that had worked its way loose from the solder. I also replaced an IC that is a frequency to voltage converter since it seemed to be a little off. Problem is that the new circuit cards are being soldered with either No Lead or Low Lead solder and the joints are brittle. What use to hold up to vibration, and thermal stress now fractures and shows cold solder joints. Good example is the XBox 360. Thermal stress and RoHS compliant solder leads to early failures.
There is a reason the military and NASA has not switched......
IMHO their distributors are still the best on the market, ignition boxes I'm not sure.
Also as an FYI Auto Meter is part of MSD.....

Where are you guys mounting these and how? I had one fail but it was in the engine compartment of my truck. I moved it inside and had no issues, also my mustang has had one in it for 6years with no issues mounted inside the car. Both are mounted with the vibration mounts. Vibration, heat, and water are the worst enimies for electrical components.

if you went to el paso texas and saw the people who worked there at the msd factory, then you would understand why all the failures.

My 6AL was mounted inside the car with the vibration mounts and it still failed. I know what caused my problem, can't say what's happening to other systems.
