Kinda wild... I don't know if I would try horse meat if it were available...

Has anyone here had it? Apparently it used to be not so taboo, or illegal.

Its more about preparing and allowing slaughter for overseas sales...it used to be legal. When the law was passed the price of horses dropped considerably. With packer's buying them you knew you would always have an option (albeit not one you would hope for). If you look at the news over the last few years you have seen more cases of abused horses left to starve and die. With packer's able to process, these animals will at least have a shot at a decent, quick end instead of a slow painful demize.
PETA folks will be up in arms I am sure.....

yeah i gathered some of that... i read one article where peta is actually for it, because the conditions they ship the horses to now are unregulated whereas the u.s. would over regulate... ain't that a shocker

On that note, should it be ok to send dogs and cats to countries where they eat them or should we continue to euthenise them?

All animals have a place in this world.... And its by the potatoes and gravy. If you can eat it and not die I will try it.

Great point dedpedal. The cats and dogs that is. I will agree with anyone that horses are great, smart animals. But at the same time this will create jobs and make the horse slaughtering industry better.

This was a trend in hte 70's but short lived. In fact there was an episode about it on 'All inthe Family'. I'd try it. Heck I've probably eaten horse, dog, and cat at some point having been in several Asian countries in my life. And as Gene states F*&K PETA!

I was watching the food channel or travel and they were somewhere in europe. Horse was a delicaasy and they had special butcher shops that specialized in horse meat. Id try it. Probably tastes like beef.

Bison is awesome. I used to work with a guy who took a vacation to Taiwan with a friend who had been there many times. They ate at this place and the guy ordered for him. He took his first bite and said it was the best tasting meat he'd ever had. When he asked his friend, the guy said don't ask if you don't wanna know....it was dog meat.

Red meat, white meat, blue meat, meat-o-fucking-rama. You will eat it. Because not eating meat is a decision. Eating meat is an instinct!

That pretty much says it all.

It's not that it's illegal to eat horse in the states, it's there is no Federal Funding allowed for the USDA to inspect facilities that slaughter horses. There for no USDA inspections in turn no legal slaughter houses. I believe the last one in the states was in Illinois and closed in 1996.

While dedpedal brings up an odd and maybe twisted thought about all the healthy dogs and cats that are euthinized a year solely because we have no place for them.
We have lots of hungry people looking for free food handouts by the government. Many humane societies are ran by local governments.
Just a thought. No I have not eaten dog or cat, but would also not have any qualms about it. Now I would not eat my dogs in particular but that doesn't rule them out as a whole.
As for eating horse, well bring it on. I don't like it as much as beef, bison, or venison it's a lot better than tofu.
It's a little on the tough side compared to beef due to the horse being more of a muscular animal.
Kind of like goose not being as tasty as duck but I'll still eat both.

I'm sure there are still tribes in South America Rain Forest, and even possibly in remote areas of Africa who still pratice this eating habit. One of the "at sea survival" techniques taught in the US Navy is cannibalism of the dead as an absolute last resort (at least when I went through basic training). There are several stories in which people have survived plane crashes by eating the fatal victims in recent years while stranded in severe conditions awaiting rescue. So I am sure you could find many a book that could asnwer this question for you.
