over heating

My car is over heating and i think its the thermostat. The car has a 160degree thermo, it will be fine then out of no where the temp will shoot up 30-40 dgrees, then it will drop back down. This is the first time its done this and the thermo is only 6 months old but it is a cheap autozone. The car does this sitting and running. Any thoughts?

i would toss a thermo in it again its easy enough to change
also i would toss a electric fan on it that should help plus free up a few hp

Could be an air bubble in the coolant system too. I would try that before putting another thermostat in it.

id check for an air bubble first. and yea the stock gauge in my car does what it wants lol i was plauged with over heating issues for the longest time. most of the time it was air bubbles, caused by a leak somewhere.

sensor malfunction, clogged radiator, restricted hoses, broken water pump fins, clogged cooling fins on radiator, air trapped anywhere in the system,

it is and mechanical thermostat, the hoses are new, the water pump is a new high flo ford motor sport, new three core aluminum radiator. How do i check if air is trapped in the system?

let it cool off, take the Radiator cap off and let it warm up at idle... it will push the air right out of the radiator eventually.

it was a nice day to have the banger out, maybe one of the few last nice ones before the green moster get tore down for paint.

Im pretty sure its the thremo, I let the car warm up and the inlet and outlet hoses where not hot. Also the radiator was not circulating. I will just tear the car done since I have a new intake with new thermo.

Take it out and put it in a pot of boiling water and see if it opens or not .

Check your radiator cap, I have seen these do exactly what you are saying and it is a cheap fix.

you can also jack it up as high as you can on the radiator cap side that helps get the bubbles out.........

Thanks guys will try, how can i tell in cap it bad, its 6 months old.

I drilled 4-6 holes in the face of the t-stat. That seemed to help the car stay cooler.

^ I did the same thing to one of our rollbacks on the side of I-71 after it kept getting hot. I used a screwdriver though. Never had another problem.
