After hearing a friend's AR and seeing the range workers come inspect it, I got to wondering. How loud is TOO loud? I think I may need a suppressor for my new toy.

Too loud for what? I just don't see any .223 AR being "too loud". A .50 cal, now that is a loud gun.

Was it a .223 or .308 AR? But silencers are fun I'm looking at getting one for my .45

Have fun getting approved for suppressors and paying for the tax stamp. Takes like 4 months. The tax stamp it pretty pricey as well.

Make sure you write "For Zombie Attacks only" on the request form

Shooting at a range, under a canopy, is louder than shooting in the open. Most AR's aren't loud. But I guess loud is a relative term. You can buy disposable ear plugs @ Walgreen's.

I've found a 16" barrel is louder than a 20" barrel.
Also depending on the flash supressor it can change the report from the rifle.

How about a 7.62x39 with a 7" barrel?

Id prefer a 10.5 to avoid possible gas piston tuning issues. Id want a stock also, but that would be an SBR. Whats another $200?

I have an AK pistol and an AR pistol. They both are obnoxiously loud. I pretty much don't shoot them anymore. :)
The shorter the barrel the louder generaly. I have an AR with an 18" barrel and it's nice and quiet compared to other stuff.

If anything Kev, it needs a "giggle supressor" cuz I couldn't stop giggling after firing it! :bigthumb

Hell, the giggle factor is why I bought it.

A guy at my home range had a 7.62X54R pistol. Barrel was probably 7-8inches. Fireball was much larger than the gun. He had in-ear plugs, cotton balls, and then over the ear muff's on to shoot it.

Forgot about the .444 Marlin I shot a few weeks ago- loud as hell and kicks like a SOB. Think .44 Mag, just longer.
