So after having a 90s model specialized hard rock forever that I loved so much I decided to go get a 2012 hardrock 29er. Anyone else on here have one of these. Just wondering if the new ones are built with the same quality as the old ones. And also a group of us are going to eastfork Tuesday around 7pm if anyone wants to ride. Walter?

I have a 2009 rock hopper 29er and like it for the most part. I just wish there was somewhere else local that has parts besides Montgomery cyclery.

The rock hopper is definatly a step up from my hard rock. But I took mine to eastfork tonight and was amazed with how much I liked it. For it still being an entry level bike I thought it was awsome.the price wasn't bad either it was 620 with tax and all. Bill we should meet up and ride soon.

I think Reser in Newport and Campus Cyclery in Clifton are also Specialized dealers, but any of the good bike shops should be able to get parts for your Rock Hopper.

Montgomery is the only one listed on Specialized website last time i checked, and the couple times I have needed specific things (derailleur hangers) the other local bike shops said to call Montgomery for the parts. I will deff. look into the other places though, thanks for the info.

Before I had kid I rode my 05' Rock Hopper pretty hard off and on. My competitive side enjoyed it very much. England-Idlewild Park near Boone County Fair Grounds is a great place to ride too with it's 13+ miles of bike trails.
Enjoy your new bike. Specialized is an excellent brand.

I like it very much. Heard good things about the Fujis but haven't ridden one myself.
As for the Mountain Bike. One can't go wrong with Specialized. I am lucky to have a pretty large specialized dealer within riding distance.
I need to get myself a Mountain Bike here soon.
I just don't find it as enjoyable as Road Biking so it's hard for me to put any money towards it when I use the road bike so much.

Unless you are racing anything serious the entry level components will more than suffice.
My wife got a Trek 1.5 with the entry level and it does great on our 25 mile rides.
I would be just fine with an entry level too, but I picked that bike up (minus tires) for $345.

Cool!
My road bike is a 2002 Kona Kapu. Full Ultegra, great mid level road bike. If you ever want to go road riding, let me know.
Like others have said, for mountain bikes you can't go wrong with Specialized. Both Katie and my mountain bikes are Specialized Rock Hoppers...mine's a 2001 A1 Comp Disc and hers is a heavily upgraded 1999 A1 Comp.

It's old school and rough looking but it's one of the best riding bikes i've ever owned. The frame is built by the same company that built Redline frames back in the day..you guys who weld, you should see the welds on this thing....like a stack of dimes. The frame geometry is great.

Gene let me get my legs and lungs back and then I will take you up on a ride. I went 8 miles at a decent pace the other day and I was feeling it. I starting eating decent and lost 10 pounds in a couple weeks then I got the bike to get back in some shape.

School a noob rider? Ive been thinking about getting a good bike for a while now, me and some buddies went riding a few times last summer and its a blast. Since everyone on here seems to like Specialized bikes, does this seem like a good deal?

How tall are you? I'm about 5' 11" and I bought a medium 17 frame and I feel very comfortable on it. I can get full leg extension with quite a bit of seat height left to go.

Not really. that bike is pretty outdated. a 15" bike is pretty dang small too.
My Specialized Hardrock is a 17" and its too small for me at 5'10".
Im comfortable on it, but I should be on a Large size bike.
Bikes are like Mustangs and the High Performance industry...you really get what you pay for. I recommend saving up for a while and buying a quality bike that you may think is out of your price range at the current time.
A lighter bike with stronger components will last you longer and you will have more fun on it. :bigthumb
Reser Bicycle Outfitters in Newport KY is the only bike shop I use. Those guys are great! http://reserbicycle.com/

I'll agree with Matt on the age of the bike...that's a lot of money for a 10 year old bike, especially since the Hard Rock is the entry level Specialized (you can buy a brand new entry-level Hard Rock for about $450).
That being said, it is a 4130 Chromoly frame, not the A1 Aluminum that Specialized has been using for the last decade or so, so if you're interested in throwing a few dollars at it to upgrade the switch gear and front fork, it could be a cool bike.
I will disagree on the size. I'm 5'9" and ride a 15" frame...I like the more compact size and the maneuverability. I do have a relatively short inseam for my height, so that may be why the 15" fits me better.

I bought a trek Mamba 29er last spring and I actually never got it to a trail I rode it about 30 miles around town and in the country. I bought it anticipating I could convince one of my friends to buy one and ride but that fell through. So I have an $800 door stop in my garage. (my wife loves to bring that up) Hopefully this fall or next spring I can manage to get it out. I used to live on my bike 24/7 growing up and then the license came and college and work and wife.
Mine is a 21" and I am 6'2" and have fairly long legs. I feel it is the perfect size for me.
