I am looking for articles and guidance on a budget build. I have a 98 v6 that I've had as a dd since I was 17 and I am finally starting to turn it into a project. My goal is to have a mid to high 12 second streetable car to play around with for UMTR. I have been collecting parts such as 8.8, k member etc. I know I want to build the engine for the overall learning experience and feeling of accomplishment type deal. I know I want to start with a 302 roller and I plan on having it n/a and carbd. Not sure if I want to attempt stroker or go 306. If anyone has articles to help and/or budget combinations or actual rotating kits from a place like Jegs that they recommend it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You can find low budget stroker motors out there all day long. Look at getting a 347 w/ an Eagle, Scat or Probe rotating assy, you can run 12's all day long on them and they will hold up.

My old 302 with my ported C90E heads, an X303 cam, Stealth intake, Holley 650dp, full exhaust, 3.73 and a 5 speed ran 12.8 @107 on bald drag radials. If my car hooked worth a crap and with a better driver it would've been a solid 12.5 or faster car, which is sick considering how many miles i had on that 302 (as far as i know it was the original '85 block).

I've seen a lot of guys pull Explorer motors out, put new valve springs on the heads, stick a Stage 1 cam in it, and run 12s all day everyday. There are also a few accounts of guys running 11.9s with similar setups in cars that dead hook. Someone on here had a combo like that but i forget who it was.

Stock explorer longblock with a bcam or tfs1 bumpstick should make 270-300 whp depending on other boltons and how agressive your tuner gets. The closer to the 300whp mark you get the closer your gonna be to breaking into the 11s if your car works. This is assuming you have a lightened up fox body. If your doing this to an sn95 car I'd shave all the weight possible and put some sort of a dry shot on it.

Thanks guys. Sounds like this will be the route I will take. Now the hunt is on for a decent longblock.

If u get one out of an explorer make sure u upgrade the valve springs. Tfs makes a kit for around 140 or if u wanna go cheaper comp cams makes a set that I've ran 2x with great results. The comp cams part number is 942-16 jegs sells them for around 70$.
