Probably should put this in the general section. Sorry.

I saw it, and I like the show, but in my opinion you can already buy an AR-10 (.308) that's setup for long distance accuracy. So I didn't quite see the point. But at least they were building a gun designed with accuracy in mind. Most of their guns seem to be semi-auto battle rifle based. Also I think a .308 (7.62x51) is much better suited for distance work than a 7.62x39, which is the factory AK round.

But it's neat none the less.

Here is a link to DPMS S.A.S.S. (semi automatic sniper system).

Actually, I watched it again ( DVR's rule ) and it's actually a .308. It's probably built on an RPK chassis, which is a beefier AK. I have a VEPR RPK (AK) in .308, there's is obviously heavily modified and surely more accurate.

I have a friend who has an ar-10 . I have been begging him to shot it. Like i said i dont know much about guns and rifles but thought it looked pretty cool. thanks for the gun lesson , i guess just like anything else , the more you pay attention the more you learn.

Just curious why you think a .308 is better suited for distance work?

It has been a top round for decades not to jump the post

AK type rifles can do some damage in the right hands

It's a matter of energy. The .308 (7.62x51 nato) is 12 mm longer than the 7.62x39 ak round, and generally shoots a heavier bullet, with more power behind it. In the links provided below, the x39 round is 123 grain, which is a fairly common weight for that round, the x51 is 150 grain, which is pretty common for general military use.

The x39 (AK) round flies at 2350 f.p.s. (feet per second) and has 1508 ft. lbs of energy at the muzzle, and has fallen 96" at 500 yards.

The x51 (.308) flies at 2820 fps and has 2648 ft. lbs. of muzzle energy, and has fallen 51" at 500 yards.

So the .308 is 20% faster, and nearly double the energy, and flies much flatter, which gives you greater range.

Basically, the .308 owns the 7.62x39 everywhere except cost. The x39 round is cheaper to shoot, and an AK is cheaper to own, which in my opinion is why it is the World's most popular gun/round combo. But make no mistake, the .308 is better.

Here are a few links to Hornady that show some ballistic info. Also, there are many different bullet weight's for these ( far more for the .308), so these links are a snapshot of these two rounds. Different ammo will have different #'s, but this is a good generalization of the two.

I should mention, when I said the x51 is 12mm longer than the x39, that's cartridge length, not bullet length. Much of that 12mm is the case, which holds more powder.

Also, I'm not being negative about the x39 or AK. I'm just pointing out that if you and I go to war, and you can only shoot to 5-600 yards accurately, and I can shoot to 1000 yards accurately, I have the advantage.

That's a fantastic explanation! Thank you! There's a little difference between a civilian .308 and the nato 7.62x51 as well.

Very well explained ibstrokin. Because all that sounded like german to me until you went into detail. Anybody see the episode where they shot the .44 mag desert eagle ? I couldnt believe the kick that handgun had.

I really enjoy the show. The internally silenced AK was pretty damn sweet.

I love the show too. Also I agree that the silenced AK was pretty sweet. It would be cool to check out their shop. I always thought a gunsmith was a cool profession but it's tedious work.

Isn't the psl just a bigger AK but shoots 7.62 by 54... As for the 308 I had a m14 in Afghanistan and my SF buddy showed me how to tag some of the local feral dogs a 600 meters. It puts those lil dogs down fast.

M14, that's what I'm talking about. My Dad has a M1a, My brother has an FAL, and I have the RPK. I like semi-auto .308's.

My Dad has a 500, and a buddy has a 460, Honestly...I would feel bad letting a woman shoot it. I don't think most women would have a sense of humor about it. But they are a lot of fun.

It was fun, desert eagle has nothing on a 460 especially a 44 mag
