What programs do u use? Like we use All Data to look up parts times. And is there any programs that u would recommend to use. My step dad is thinking about opening his own Mechanic shop. What could he use to keep up on money in and out, over head cost etc... Anything really that u can think of that would help. AllData will be gone because of the monthly cost. He will go to books if need be. Any how Thanks in advance!

Is there any OFF line programs? Not a monthly bill kinda thing? Also what about receipts? He plans on using just a book from office depot but what about a program for that? Something that would print them out 1 and him for records? Thx guys

I use Quickbooks Pro which is a one time fee, then every couple years you have to update it. It allows you to track your parts and other expenditures along with giving invoices and sales receipts out and it's all automatically tracked and totaled for you. It's hard to get used to using it, but if you're computer savvy at all you can get the hang of it. I suggest getting an accountant or someone versed in QBP to set it all up for you and give you some instruction when you get it to get you started.

QB vs mitchell1 is no match, time and labor guides is the biggest thing for me. You can keep good record of verdors., set up a % matrix for parts. Also you can print a year end spread sheet including a DTI chart. It depends what kind of shop your opening really.
Mitchell has a program to integrate to quick books also. I used it last year and didnt see any advantage.

We use mitchell for billing stuff, as far as labor guides, and looking up repair information ALLdata is much better than Mitchell in my opinion. In a day we use
-Alldata
-Mitchell
-IATN
-Oasis
So there are lots of options. Mitchell for invoicing, quick books for your records ;)
