We just have a Tahoe Q3 as our starter boat, already thinking of selling the stang to move into something bigger for next year. BTW Kelly were you coming home on Sat? I passed a dark colored super duty pulling what looked to be a baja. We were hauling our camper back down to the campsite.

We stay at a yearly rental campground called Cumberland Point campground, it is approx 4-5 miles from Cumberland Point ramp. We also rent a 40x12 garage from the campground for $600/yr. It is a couple more $$ than can be found but it is right on site and very convenient and sure beats the hell out of towing back and forth every time.

Cumberland Point is very nice and all the people there are really cool. They are just expanding and have sites available but you will have to jump quick because they will be booked in no time at all. If you call you will talk to Scott or Fritzy, the owners, just tell them Kenny Meade sent you.

Here's mine. Its an 88 Checkmate Starflite. I restored it last winter with some help from some friends. Enjoyed it this past summer, but its too slow with the 200 on it, only went 64.6 on the GPS. So I have been saving my pennies and am buying a new 300xs to throw on it. If I have the balls to drive it, it should run upper 80's to low 90's with that setup.

We also do all of our boating at Cumberland. My parents have a house on the Big South Fork right by Burnside State Park.

Hey mustangboy, do you know Pat and Teresa Fullenkamp? They have a Moomba and camp at the same place as you?

If you all ever get together down at Cumberland, let me know. I'm down there about every other weekend and boat clear into November. I also have a ritual of taking the boat out every new years day, anybody is free to join me!!

Oh yeah. Got a little crazy buying aluminum accessories from Eddie Marine. Pop up cleats, powered pop up bow light, aircraft style gas cap stuff like that. Upgraded to hydraulic steering, added another 6" of setback. And have 225 Optimax for it now. Not the 300 I wanted but a ton cheaper, and should still push the boat to the mid to high 70's. Also did some stereo upgrades. Added some component speakers a couple of amps and 2 10's. It's not even Christmas yet and I'm already chomping at the bit for next years boating season!!!

What size is your boat? What does that thing weigh to go high 70's on a 225?

corey331
12-20-2011, 04:46 PM
It's 21 feet long. The hull without the motor weighs roughly 1100 pounds. It's very light. And the 225 is a 3.0L where my 200 is only a 2.4L so the torque difference is HUGE!!

must be light, glad it's not on Erie! she would get swallowed up! high 70's seems awful fast for that engine, but I don;t know outboards too well.. I am BBC guy..

Yeah, it's essentially a bass boat hull. Very shallow and light. Works great in Cumberland, but there is no way I would take it on Erie. My dads boat has been on Erie a ton though. He has a 24' Baja. The 454 let go at the end of last season. So it's getting a little upgrading as well. It will now be 496ci with a Procharger. I love the sound and power of a big block but it's funny how much faster 65 feels in my little boat than it does in his. And you really have to "drive" mine.

I figured it must be very light. It takes 700+ horsepower to get an outlaw 25 to high 70s low 80s. I plan on turning the boost up a couple pounds for next year and adding the dynojet CMD marine to tune it. I'm also adding a third battery to power the stereo so I can go a full day with the stereo on without recharging.

I'm also looking to add the captains call exhaust back onto my boat for next year. I usually don't get down until late friday nights and when I launch to get to the houseboat I wake everyone in the marina up

I gotta say I don't know if I would buy a boat that didn't have a BBC in it unless it was an outboard. I can't believe the power this thing makes on low boost and is very reliable. Although the BBC and the 83lb injectors aren't helping the wallet any. I can easily go through 100 gallons of gas a weekend

I hear ya on the fuel, I'm feeding two of em... :(

Yeah I got sold on a boosted big block after riding in my buddies Checkmate 300 Convinsor. It has a bone stock 496mag HO with a Procharger pushing only 3.5 psi and the damn thing runs low 80's on the GPS!! Gave my dad a ride this summer and that was it, he knew he was going with boost. But I do love my outboard too. Great fuel economy and pushes the boat very well!

I had intended on dropping my 408 kit into my Jetboat but my car was my first priority and it didn't get done over the winter. I think I might just throw a new set of headgaskets on the 403 Olds motor that's in it and get rid of the points distributor just to get it on the water for one more season.

I'm not sure it'll be able to handle the waves on Cumberland, I'll probably have to stick to Ceasers Creak.

Well, did quite a bit of upgrading this year. I blew my back out last year pretty bad so the little 21 foot checkmate had to get sold. Broke my heart to do it, but I couldn't ride in it for more than 10 minutes without being in pain. So I replaced it with this..

http://imageshack.us/a/img195/3407/img0540ud.th.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/195/img0540ud.jpg/)
http://imageshack.us/a/img705/3697/img0542ef.th.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/705/img0542ef.jpg/)
http://imageshack.us/a/img6/2378/img0554em.th.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/6/img0554em.jpg/)

Its a 98 Checkmate 253 Convinsor. The ride is awesome compared to my little one. And I bought it just in time cause this past February my wife and I were blessed with identical twin girls, so this boat is a lot deeper and safer for them.

Last weekend I made it down to the lake to start a small stereo upgrade, lol.

http://imageshack.us/a/img7/8660/20130405181021.th.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/7/20130405181021.jpg/)

Now I am in the process of building a little more power for it. I started with a Gen VI 454 block and stroked it to a 496. I am running a set of Edelbrock aluminum victor marine heads and a merc hp500 cam. Just picked up a 850 Demon carb and a set of Lightning headers as well. I just have an intake and some other odds and ends to pick up before it will be complete. I'll probably run the 454 thats in it for this summer and do the install next winter. Oh yeah, I bought this for it too...

http://imageshack.us/a/img9/719/20121207161808.jpg

It ought to run pretty good!! I have a buddy with an almost identical combo in the same hull and he has hit 87 on the GPS at 7lbs of boost. I'm going to start out at 5lbs so I am hoping to hit the low 80's. Needless to say, i am addicted to speed on the water. So much more fun than in the car. Nobody looks at you funny for having a cooler full of beer in your 700-800hp boat, in fact its expected. But they kind of frown upon that in the cars.

Great looking boat man! What marina is that?

We got rid of our cruiser over the winter and upgraded to a houseboat...more everyone's speed now that there is a little one running around. Parties should be fun this year on the water!
Now I just need to figure out if I want to keep messing with this stupid Mustang and get a Fountain or start with a smaller runabout and work my way up to something bigger while keeping the heap!

That pic was taken at Lees Ford. That was the first time out with the boat, so we made a run up there for dinner. Where are you out of? I usually put in at Burnside State Park but we run the whole lake. I can usually be found in McGuffy creek up by the dam, but sometimes we venture to Harmon. However, with the lake coming back up a little this year, I might venture into 76 falls or the old Party Cove up river from Burnside. If you ever see the Checkmate with the pink stripe on the side named "Feelin Nauti-er" (First boat was "Feelin Nauti") come on over and say hi!! Or if you are heading up the Big South Fork, we are the log home that has first dock on the left passed the state park launch ramp, give a honk and a waive!!

89Notch, I'll have to track ya down sometime, I'd really like to take a look at your setup. Maybe get some pointers for when I install my motor next winter. My dad just got his motor finished up for his Baja. I came a cross a 525sc that needed freshened up, so we redid it, converted it to hydraulic roller and put a stock 502 mag efi cam in it and put an 502 efi fuel injection setup on it with a 2.3L Whipple. It should be running pretty good this year for an old 88 Baja. Its goona be a sleeper!!

bkstang, there was a good deal a month or so ago on powerboatlistings.com on a 2001 29ft fountain with twin 454 mag efi's for $26,000!! It looked like it needed a good cleaning, but thats a heckuva deal!! I think it was in Utah. I almost thought about selling mine and picking it up, but right now I don't feel like trying to feed a set of twins, other than my little girls, lol. Maybe when I retire I'll invest in a big tunnel with a couple of mountain motors in it, but thats a long way off. I can't speak for everybody, but once I got the performance boat bug, that's all I wanted to do. My Grand National has sat in the garage for two years not getting touched. I might mess with it when i get this motor done, but I doubt it, lol.

I'm hoping on decent water and 5lbs it will top 80+ with this safe tune on it. I've seen 86 on gps but it was a much more aggressive tune up and perfect water on the river. I've got to get hydraulic steering installed ASAP before I try anymore 70+mph runs. This thing is hairy at those speeds.

I'm sayin!! I was talking to a guy at the launch ramp by the dam at Cumberland last year with a 43ft Nortech with triple 700sci's and I asked him how much fuel it burned just out of curiosity. He said he runs it hard, but on the 40 mile round trip cruise from the dam to Harmon Creek and back he burns around 150 gallons!!! F THAT!!!! But I guess if you can afford the boat, the gas is no problem.

I can believe that. I think running mine hard I'm getting .5mpg out of mine. If I'm easy on it I can get as much as 1mpg. It's nothing for me to burn 100 gallons in 2 days

I thought about the Yahama they look nice and like the seats on the back. how does it perform with the twin jets?

mustangboy
05-02-2013, 08:45 AM
Yeah seats on the back are awesome we spend a bunch of time back there. As for the twins it will get out of the hole in a big hurry. Top speed is still only low to mid 50's but that is fine with me as we rarely are wide open. Only complaint I have is wood chips getting stuck in the impellers. Cumberland has been driving a barge around the lake chipping fallen trees back into the lake. We just have to avoid that damn barge

If you plan on using it at some of the smaller lakes around here that are a little shallow, or have stumps, one of those jet boats would be perfect. No worry about hitting bottom. Correct me if I'm wrong mustangboy, but once they are up on plane can't they run in as little as 12-18" of water? The only complaint I have ever heard from one of the jet boat owners is bad fuel economy. But in my opinion, if you are getting into boating, you don't need to worry about fuel economy, cause none of them are good.

Fiberglass is in good shape.

asking 11,500.00 the way it sits with no engines/trans/drives/props....I am keeping GPS too...

440-476-4114 TEXT/CALL located Marblehead/Cleveland, Ohio

There was a fortune spent building this boat and the hull is very nice...title in hand..

THIS IS NOT THE TYPICAL ROTTED HULL LIKE MOST YOU SEE WITH NO POWER....... you can put engines in and go....if you have a rotted or a doner boat this is perfect for you!!! It is easier to do engines then 15,000 in fiberglass/paint/interior work.... this is a great starting point believe me.... I started with a bad hull once, wasted 20,000.......

Will consider all reasonable offers..... I don't want to part this out unless I have to, its too nice a boat....worth more in parts but rather see someone use it....can be had cheaper if you don't need other parts and I will keep stuff from it.... let me know how you want hull....
