What are your questions? It's better off posting here so many people can reply to it. Lots of people have done this, myself included.

I'm taking the engine and tranny out of a 98 gt and putting it into my 96. I got most my bases covered.
The only the I'm not certain of is the electronics. Do I need to take the whole ecu out of the 98? The engine
Is still in the 98, it should be out later today.

I could see the ECM, but why the harness? 96-98 were the same AFAIK. You would have a couple of plugs not used due to the auto, but everything should be the same.

That was my next question, should I use the same harness.
I am taking that 98 apart, so I will pull it out and use it so I know
It will work.

that's what he's saying is that you don't need to.... if it were me i'd pull the harness anyway and just put it aside.... never know when you'll need something but as usafstang stated you can use your current harness..... my current car and the car before that were both swapped 5 speed cars and both of them used auto harness...

Ok. Less work is good with this job lol.
Since you done this more than once,
You got any tips that would make it any easier,
Something you may have learned the hard way?

I have everything disconnected, I only need to take out the clutch pedal and disconnect the cable.
Then I can pull the engine and tranny.

ummmmm you might have to cut around where the shifter comes up through the floor a little if I had it to do again i'd take a pattern from a factory one....... ummmmm get a great cable right off the rip don't skimp..... if the factory cable is still good I'd put a firewall adjuster on at the same time........ first time around I bought everything brand new T-5 Z etc.... if i had it to do over again i'd bought a used T-56 and been done with it.... hmmmm make sure you get the neutral saftey, and the back up light resistor or whatever it's called..... I can't really think of much else off the top of my head... obviously i'd repalce anything new that you can.... clutch, throwout bearing needle bearing, etc that stuff is all cheap and well worth it to repalce it now.......

Ok thanks man. I'll let you know how it turns out.

if you stick with a factory cable i'd do a double hook quadrant too that way you can use the firewall adjuster.......

Does anyone know if the transmission cross member from my auto will work for the 5 speed??

Just did this on my 98gt but I used a 3650 out of a newer GT. I think the crossmember out of the auto will work but if you have the five speed one just use it. You willl need to cut around the shifter a bit. I would change the computer also, i used the auto computer and it has the engine light on. You will want to swap the trans harness also, I used the auto one and the netrual saftey switch will not work.

I did this on a fox, and on a sn95, its pretty straight forward swap! If you have the donor parts from the 5speed car there then i would change as many of them as possible! and as far as the comment about the quadrant, change it out for any aftermarket one you can, the stock ones are JUNK! lol :D

I have the donor car here in my driveway.. It has the cross member, I could not get it out though.. I tried penetrating oil. It only rounded the bolts:(
If I had to, I could cut the bolts I guess.

Don't use the computer from the 98. Because of the PATS the car will not run without turing it off with a tune or swapping the steering column, the ignition switch, and all the locks to use the keys from the 98. Its best to keep your existing computer and have the auto trans functions turned off with a tune .

That is the correct. The auto trans computer will work just fine for the install. When you get the car tuned they will just turn off the auto functions. The car will run fine and drive, just when coming to a stop you will have to take and maybe give it a little gas just so it don't die. I done this a long while back and its not that big of a deal. As far as installing the pedals, I found that taking out the steering column makes it a whole lot easier (4 bolts on the column and couple harnesses and a bolt on the steering shaft that telescopes). Also the 5 speed car might have a different rear end gear. It should be a 3:08 in the auto. I am not sure in the 5 speed car. Hope I helped.

Blackout, when you said that the car could stall when coming to a stop,
Is that before or after you have the auto functions turned off?
I have an sct x3 tuner, I assume that will work for tuning off the auto functions?

Blackout

Yeah. The x3 will work fine. But your tuner guy will still need to turn off the auto functions

BigB96

Ok, so was the car stalling when coming to a stop after the tune turned off the auto function ?

Once turned off it acts just like every other 5 speed

Ok I have the engine and 5 speed tranny in my car..
I just need to finish buttoning everything up. I used the auto ECM,
I left the wire harness on the engine and tranny from donor car, what do I need to
Do about the neutral safety switch? I heard and read different things. It will be best
To hear it from someone that has actually done it already

well there is a plug on the harness under the dash that had basically a wire that is looped. unplug it and plug it into the safety nuetral switch on the pedal. I never did install the one on my car but its dangerous. never start the car with out you being in the drivers seat.

Ok... The swap is done! Everything went pretty smooth. I just have
To run my x3 out to cincy speed so they can turn off my auto functions.
I just wanted to thank those those helped me out and answered my questions!
