Any idea what steel I-beams are worth?

Not talking rods, actual steel I beams used in construction. My dad bought 8-10 of them a few years back wanting to build a backyard A-frame lift or something like that. Now they are just taking up space in the back yard and some guy offered $850 for them. They are about 12" tall/wide if I remember correctly and most are between 15-20' long. I'd think by weight alone they might be worth more?

My brother in law owns a metal recycling company, I will see what he says. Depending on wall thickness I would guess they would be around $200 a ton. I will ask for sure though.

I'm a buyer for a local company and just looked into purchasing some similar. This is just to give you an idea what the beams sell for as beams and not scrap.

Used 6000# 5" wide 12" tall x 102" long I can buy for $12 bucks each.....


I'd take the $850 and run...... but that's me

I just called my buddie, he owns H&H super structures, he said tell the guy to call him he has tons of that stuff laying around he would nearly give him... 30 bucks a 12 ft pieces...

$850 is a decent deal if he is picking them up and hauling them. Depending on the length and actual size my brother in law showed interest also. typical formula for a 12" I beam with say a .650 wall is about 50 lbs a foot. Measure them all and you will have an approximate weight

With scrap prices being around $200 a ton, I'd think they would go for more $$$. You have any estimate on the weight?

Even if the scrap value is a little more, consider the pain-in-the-ass price. What does it cost you in time and recruiting friends to help get 10 20' I-beams to the scrapyard?

I am interested in them as well if you don't have them sold already. If the guy offered you $850 however I woudl take it. I have been watching them on craigslist and you are doing good. I need a large quanity of the same type.

Alan, the place I found them at is in Tampa but I searched the entire country for qty pricing as in about 50-100 of them. The guy in Tampa was the least expensive by almost half. As far as freight I can get you a pretty good deal too, I just send 40 of those beams to Miami from Cincinnati and it cost me about $120

I would take the $850 and run too! We took 3 to Franklin Iron and Metal and got $22 out of them.

I need to figure out exactly what I need and how many. Because the structure is already here I will need 2 big ones so I can run trolleys on them and use them for roof support over the back and then I will need about 20 beams that are 40 ft long but only 2.5-3 inches in height and width.
