Im doing a 302 swap for a friend of mine. His 302 in his 93 f150 took a dump on him. We found a guy on CL that had a nice 302 out of a 97 mountaneer. While swapping out the two front lower intake studs to replace with bolts they snapped off. So i pulled the lower to get at the bolts. I covered the oil valley so as not to get trash in there while i was working on the snapped bolts. after i was finished i removed the rags and inspected for debris. Thats when i noticed that a couple pushrods had what appeared to be rust. So i started looking around some more and found that some of the tops of the lifters had rust. I finally broke down and pulled all the lifters to see if there was any signs of rust on the rollers of the lifters. The number 5 had a small spot on the roller so i shined a light down the lifter bore and saw a small spot on the cam lobe. I guess where i am going with this is, How far should i dissasemble to look for more rust. I am already planning on pulling the cam and inspecting to see how much rust is on it. I guess at this point i might as well pull the oil pan and look under a main cap. Anybody ever see this? Am i wasting my time with this motor? The old motor sh*t a main bearing by the way. thanks in advance.

I'm not positive on this as it was on t.v. but i've seen shows where they pull cars or motors out of the junk yard all they do is spray some PB Blaster in the cylinders and throw it back together and seems fine....... now would I want that in my Stang I doubt it but if it was an old pick up truck maybe.....

Try to turn it over with a wrench, if its not seized then Id throw it together n put it in. Put a little ATF in each cylinder and fire her up..

its definately not seized. I even inspected the oil when i drained it for metel shavings or antifreeze. It was clean as a whistle. That is why i was so freaked out by the rust. I am going to change out the pans so i am going to inspect the bottom end. If all checks out i will just polish the one can lobe and replace all the lifters and pushrods. I will snap some photos and post up next time i head out there.

I agree. It's not uncommon to have some surface rust in an engine coming from a junkyard. Little bit of condensation gets in the valve covers and since it hasn't been turned over in awhile many of the parts are void of oil and will begin to surface rust. Fire it up.

It should be fine, think of a car thats at a few years, you fire it up, normally it is good to go, now... if you plan to build this into a street car beating engine, I would rethink it, but if it is just for a truck or beater...go for it, I would..

Well i got the cam out of the motor and its toast. There is rust on most of the lobes and its pitted. However all the cam bearing journals and cam bearings in the block are perfect. There is no rust and still oil on them. I also pulled the oil pan and looked around and there are absolutely no signs of rust. Since i had the old motor with the spun rod bearing i took the cam and lifters out of that motor and inspected. That cam and lifters appear to be in very good condition. I am very tempted to say F*ck it and put them in the new block and rock and roll it. What do you guys think?

I would go ahead and swap the old stuff over but i would also and install a high volume oil pump and let it idle for a hour with a qrt of atf change the oil drive it for a week and change the oil again yeah its probly over kill but it would make me feel better if it was my motor

Man you are good with swaping cams and firing it up and rolling. I do this for a living. And if a customer to me with this I would deffently go the way you are thinking. Trust your gut bud 90% of the time its right
