I know Ian "drivermod" put a metal roof on his house. I think he and a few friends were able to do it over a weekend.

Im not opposed to doing the work. Just kinda need to know where to get the material and a round about cost. Its a simple roof. Just 16x46 on each side. One vent.

It ended up being alittle more than I was thinking from there. Shingles again it is.

I believe you can get those metal roof materials from menards or Lowes.

Higgins is the best place to get the stuff. I like to get the screws at carter lumber.

Not for $4500 and thats just the metal. No trim no nothing. Ill have 1/4 of that in shingles and material.

Mine was roughly 50 x 15 on each side with a step down to the garage so there was some extra flashing and I had a total of about $2500 in supplies. Thats everything to do the job. I got my supplies from Corkin Steel in Covington. The style of metal can make a big difference. I went with the classic rib and it turned out great. I was also able to claim it on my taxes becasue it is energy star rated and I recieved 30% of the cost back on my return. Yay Obama:rolleyes: Me and 10 other guys stripped two layers of shingles and put down the metal in one day and only a couple of them had ever done it before. The metal has a 45 year guarantee on the paint. Hopefully it's the last time I have to do a roof on this house.

That may be where the extra cost comes from. It was the standing seam metal that I was quoted on.$2500 sounds alot better to me.

Thats what I figured. The price can vary ALOT depending on the style and guage of metal. I think the classic rib looks really nice.

We didn't need the break for the roof. I covered the facia trim boards with aluminum while we were at it. I've been thinking about partially covering my back deck as well. Let me know if you need any info. The people at Corken were very helpful.

1" x 3" furring strips 24" on center. About $200 worth.

No?

Ever been on a shingle roof? Lol. With the metal theres the furring strips that helps as a breather to help with that.

I see you're tired of the storm damages we keep getting. I've got more tabs missing after the last big wind storm. I've replaced 10 in the past few years. Time for insurance to kick in I guess.

I have no damage. Its just the insurance company seems to want to raise my rates because of the age of the roof.

Another good reason. We got a price break on our homeowners insurance due to the metal roof. I doubt it was much but I remember the agent coming out to confirm after we put it on.

Mine went up $145 this year. They said after the new roof it will drop $173. I didnt ask if it would be any different for metal or shingle. Either way Im tired of paying extra escrow and higher house payments.

How old is it and what is the rating on the shingle already there? 15, 20, 25yr? Do you have to strip the roof before replacing it?
Just curious because our insurance hasn't said anything about raising rates due to the roof age. Our house is 13 years old and I'm betting I have 15 yr shingles since contractors seem to cut corners anyway they can.....

I got an adjuster coming out and I have no idea if they are going to insure the home are not. I'll cross my fingers because of all the water damage the storms made to the home in the last month and half. Hopefully they won't raise the insurance on the home, I don't see the point if they don't cover any of our water damage. Myself I'm going with a three Dimensional shingle, the neighbor down the street has a metal roof which looks nice but I'm going with the tried and true.

I have no clue. It already has 2 layers. Last year when I talked to the insurance company they asked if I had put a foof on the car since 1990?. How would I know. I was like 9 years old then lol. Im wanting to do a roof over the deck anyway so some of the shingles have to come off anyhow. And I want the insurance to come back down.

Well two layers, over 20 years old and the recent storm damages in the area is probably the reason why since its probably considered a higher risk. Well post up pics of the roof when your done.

A house isnt like a barn. You have drywall, insulation, plywood, flet paper, furring strips then a 3/4'' gap between the those and the metal. Doubt itll be much different. Like Ive said before why would they put it on brand new houses, buildings and churches if it was no good? Its actually supposed to make your home more efficient too.
Picked the metal up yesterday. Now theres a chance of rain the rest of the week. Fuk!

I lived in a house with a metal roof until I was in 6th grade. I never noticed any extra noise from rain unless I was in the attic and it was a very old house.

My grandparents have a metal roof. You can kind of hear it when it is raining really hard, but the bigger complaint is that the metal roof seems to block cell phone signals inside their house. It is next to impossible to get a solid signal the doesn't constantly drop calls. As soon as you walk outside you have next to a full signal.

Good way of getting people to stop calling you on your cell when you're home... :D

They was coming off fine wit the tool I made. Way better than a coal shovel. It was just too much work for one person. They had 3 guys and had it done in no time. All done. I just need a seamless gutter company to shoot me some gutters out now.
