View Full Version : cutting a coil spring

I want to lower the front of my vert a little. I will hopefully be going coil overs on all four corners this winter. so I just want something to tide me over, and make the car look a little more aggressive. (and mainly, BE CHEAP! :D )
my question is, is it safe? I can live with a rougher ride for the summer if it means getting rid of the 4x4 stance. but I want it to be just as safe and reliable as before. I assume that all the other aspects of lowering would still apply (need c/c plates etc.)
if it is safe. how would you guys go about doing it?
thanks.

Do not heat them and bend, only cut, i don't recommend doing this but you can do it. You should just put a big block in it, that will lower the front about an inch or 2.

I have cut the ones in my convertible cut ,and they are fine, I also cut the ones in my old coupe and it seemed ok.

Use a whiz wheel (thin cutting wheel) to cut one end off. NEVER cut a coil spring using heat/torch as you take the temper out of the spring. Using a hacksaw is futile unles you have an hour or two and 20 blades to waste.

For a 1 to 1-1/2" drop I would cut about a half coil out.

Haha. No cash for a big block. thanks for all the advise guys. Now we'll just have to wait and see if I ever get around to doing it!
