View Full Version : How much hp/boost can stock rods handle?

Im gotta a 306 thats gonna have dish forged pistons and stock rods with arp hardware and a stock crank

I was planning on boosting the car and I was just curious what you guys thought the rods would be able to handle?

Or should I just buy forged rods if so what else might I need to swap the rods or can I just buy the rods?

Thanks in advance
Josh

If your still running a stock block...I wouldn't worry about the rods. A stock 5.0 roller block in the weak link....~550rwhp is pushing one pretty hard to stay in one piece. Rods will hold more than that if you keep the RPM's within reason.

Jeff is speaking the troof!!! There's been some that stay together making more but, there's been a lot not hold together making much less, lol. As long as you're ok knowing all hell could break loose at any given time, you'll have a lot of fun with it!!!

We were running ~500rwhp up to 7000rpm for a while with the factory rods and crank.

A master power 70 will make plenty for a stock block build. A 76 is nice too...just don't get too crazy with the boost controller, lol.

Thats wat I was thinkin going with a 70.

Wats a safe lb of boost with my set up?

if you are going to have the motor apart i would try to put a main support on it. like stated the blocks will split in half.

Main support? U got more info or a link of this?

Yea block is already tore all apart.

Skip the main support. It wont help.

The support is one of those things that is good in theory, but with a stock block it won't help.

Yeah skip the main support. Boost level is going to depend on your HP goals and how far you're willing to push it.

Gordon on here can answer you on that. He just grenaded a 5.0 in his Saleen that was running 12psi (I think he said 12) and it was making 468 RWHP. Don't recall the Torque number. Don't think he had anything other than a stock short block in his car or nothign more tha nwhat Saleen did to them then. The S/C was added after the car was rogianlly purchased. Engine had 50K on it when it let loose at mid track during the race day cruisein. PM him. He may be abole to give you some more details on what his was. He's looking into a 347 dart short block now, or possible a LB if there was extensive head damage.

SC's put a lot more strain on everything though. I'd go with a turbo forsure. I ran up to 18lbs on mine with a MPT70. A lot of it is in the tune also. You have much detonation and your stuff is gonna break quick.

Exactly why i asked. Turbo is easier on parts.

Alum heads or iron heads? What piston material? Pump gas? What trans?

Not many get away with running a stock block on the edge. Best to keep is conservative, driving style and attention to detail (engine, turbo kit, overall build) plays a big role on getting em to last.

yea aluminum heads, dss pistons, pump gas, right now i only have a w.c. t5 looking to up grading that when i get extra cash. money is tight

when its done if it ever gets there i wont be driving it much. my last mustang i only put 4k on it in like 2-3 years. and i never really ever beat them when i drive just every now and then

wat safe amount of boost to run?????

PSI is just a #. You can make 550 on 14 psi or 550 on 19 psi. Depends on timing and af.

Depends on how well your motor flows. Probably 12-13lbs would be fine.

35lbs should be okay..:)

I was kinda hoping to be around 8-10 psi on a stock rotator with P heads sometime this coming year. But who knows with the way everythings going right now.

so wat would be a safe amount of boost????

Start at 10 and tune on it on the dyno till you get whatever power you want.

I've got a stock 302 with alum GT40 heads, steeda #18 cam and eddy performer intake. Granted my tune isn't completely finished yet but I made 458 rwhp at 11psi and there was plenty of room left for more. I've been told by several people that anymore than 500rwhp and your gonna split the block in two so Im gonna try to stay around the 450 mark rather than risk grenading a shortblock. So long story short 10-12psi depending on your combo and tune anymore and its gonna go boom.
