Quick question! Anyone ever tried it? Installing GT40 heads on a 5.0 and the head bolts are stock 7/16 and the heads have the 1/2 holes. Ive been told it would work but I wanna know if anyones done it.

Were they drilled, for 1/2" bolts? I thought GT40 and GT40Ps came 7/16".

:dunno:

Yeah so did I until I put the bolts in the holes! Someone may have drilled them at some point.

Original gt-40 heads were drilled for 1/2, as they came on the Lightnings. I had a friend that ran a set on a 302 block and used 7/16 studs with no bushings. He said the dowels are what placed the head. He ran it that way for a long time with no issues. With that said...I would run the bushings.

We wanted to but he had to have the car back together to drive to work today so we went with it. Maybe if he wantes to pick them up from Mike we'll pull them and put on the bushings.

Could have gotten them within a day from summit. TFS's set is resonable.

Hell, he was standing in my shop on Sat morning, he could have had them same day, lol. and I am SURE my pricing would be better than summit ever dreamed of being, lol. I don't need them!

Not trying to cut your biz, I assumed he would drive to you if they were in stock.

Well the story goes like this... I started on it Saturday afternoon pulling it apart. Got that done around 5 or so and when we started putting it together I noticed it. I called the guy and we tried to find a used set around since he needed the car back the next night. We couldnt find any so I posted this up to see if anyone has done it before and their outcome if any. We all sat around and decided to just throw it together and HOPE its good.

so far so good. but yeah ill deff be intrested in the ones that mike has cause ill be putting all this stuff on another short block here real soon as there was some things we didnt really like the looks of when putting this back together. but as of now this is my daily driver and i had to get to work. i know alot of ppl are prolly thinking im nuts but if i dont make it to work i cant pay the bills and i allso have 4 kids to feed..plus i wouldnt have spare money for the mustang when i start on the new motor. lol

It will be fine. i know others that have done it and still runnin it so it cant be to bad. Should we have used them? Yes. But with the way everything went down, we did what we could and got it back up and runnin before you had to go to work!! Once the new motor is in the works, we`ll worry about it then.

So, all "original" GT40 heads had 1/2" holes? And the reason was because they used the head on lightnings?

So if the heads came off a true Cobra, would they still be 1/2"? If so, did Ford use the adapter bushings?

Reason I ask, I have a set of true 40's sitting in my garage for future use (and I'm at work and cant measure the holes, lol)

Plus, a buddy of mine has true GT40's that came off of an explorer, and we plan to put them on a 351W.

No i had some that was 7/16 holes. Thats why I didnt think anything about it till we was getting ready to bolt them on.
