What's out there that will allow me to put the wife and kid or kids in, maybe a wagon, camping gear and possibly a guitar, all without cramping??
We just came back from Georgia in our Dodge Caliber and it sucked. Need to upgrade.

bunch of stuff new and used, a 4 cylinder escape would have some room, minivans obviously even more
the suv's are going to get a little taxing on the 25mpgs
the new explorers do, but your getting pricey, not sure what range your looking for

I wanted a flex but had to settle for an hhr. We have an escape and hhr and love both. We get over 25 in both cars.

Our 2010 outback is great 27-30 MPG awd. If they can fix the thing will keep it.

I am pretty sure I will be replacing my Explorer with a Jetta Diesel Sport Wagon in the near future.
35+ mpg some even claim around 50 mpg on the Highway.
Sticker price is 26,000 for an Automatic.
Cargo room is not much less than my Explorer. Plus we don't use the cargo area for anything but the dogs as we have a roof top cargo carrier that holds quite a bit.

Here is the cargo carrier I have

Easily hold bags for 5 people just need to use soft sided duffle bags. Sport Rack is the same company as Thule the more expensive brand. I called customer service to get replacement keys and they answered the phone "Thule Customer Service".
I got mine on Craiglist brand new for $75. The thing is great. Just got back from a 2,000 mile road trip through rain and snow. No rain got in and had cruise control set on 80 mph with no loss in gas mileage.

We LOVE LOVE LOVE our Flex AWD Ecoboost. It doesn't quite get the 25mpg minimum you have, but it is close. I have gotten 22-23 on the highway, but haven't made any big trips yet to verify. Going with the FWD version gets you the gas mileage you need though.

Today we looked at the Jetta Sport Wagon, Kia Sorento, Subaru Forester, Mazda5 and the Ford Fusion. Wife is leaning toward the Forester. Anyone here have a hook up?
