how do you tell the pattern of a auto shifter?:confused:

Depends if it is a reverse valve body or standard valve body in the transmission

I think he is asking about the shifter not the trans. If the shifter is OE just get a pt # off of it and check with a junk yard or pts. department at a dealor.

If you're talking about the Quarter Stick, it goes like this.
Forward will shift up, like stock, except you pull the lock out lever to go into "drive".
Reverse starts in the drive position and goes backward, pulling the lock out lever to go into the "first" position (which is third gear).
Does that make sense?

I'm not sure what you are describing.
With the shifter in park, it will go R N then D 2 1. This would be forward shift and you would pull all the way back for first, then forward for second and it won't go into drive, without pulling the lever.
With the shifter in park, it will go R N then 1 2 D. Start in first, then back to second and it won't go into drive, without pulling the lever.
