Man, i don't know jack about the DSLR's but i had a sick Canon SLR years ago. Now i just have a simple Sony Cyber-Shot 14mp with the sweep panoramic mode...and i love it. It even takes decent video for a camera. Point and shoot cameras have come a LONG way. It even has a smile recognition option that automatically snaps a picture when a smile is detected and it works amazingly well.

I personally prefer the Nikon Digitals. Shot Canon film for years but their digitals just didn't "feel" good. Each has its own pros and cons. I think the Nikon glass is superior over the Cannon. Bottom line if you are starting....get a good midline model (the 3100 is very good) and save to buy the best glass you can afford!

Completely agree, I have a Nikon D90, love it but probably more camera than I needed in my first DSLR. Hopefully I never have to buy one again though. My sister in law has the Nikon 5000 very nice also.

The 55-200 lens....ehhh I wouldnt get hung up or overly excited about that being bundled in. Im saving up for a nice macro and wide angle lens. My sister in law has the Nikon 5000 it seems very nice also.

Can you provide any insight on this lens?

Thanks guys. Appreciate the feedback. Looks like I will be picking up a D3100 tomorrow. Looking forward to making some use of it. I see so many neat things during my travels and never have a camera and wished I had. I have been thinking of this for a while. The prices have come down to be in line with what I would consider reasonable finally so its time to make the move.

I looked around forever before getting a Nikon D3000 with the VR15-55mm lens. We love it. The lens is great and still easily portable. Good choice for a nice SLR camera that wont break the bank!

I have an 18-105VR lens that came with the camera and also a 55-200vr. The 55-200 pretty much stays in the bag. Im just usually not that far away when taking pics and wish I had went with a macro or wide angle instead of the 55-200.

I agree with what Dave said. Buy a decent body and save the real money for the glass.

I bought a Nikon D60 a few years ago and could not be happier with it. I have taken it to Hawaii and the Caribbean with me and have taken so great photos.

Picked up the new D3100 today. Should be more than enough camera for my needs and wants. Just need to decide what software photo editing package to get now or should I just download gimp2.6 and try to figure out how to use it? I know zero about photoediting. Thanks everyone for the assistance. Oh, found an open box purchase that lowered the price another 60 bucks. SCORE!!

Yip, I am lovin' it. Only wish nw I had gottenthe 300MM zoom. It comes in real handy for nature photos and distant scenic shots. THe view finder is bar none the best I have ever had.
