I might get bashed for this, but..
Clint Eastwood > John Wayne
I always thought John Wayne was a piss poor actor..sorry. My ex had this stupid love story movie with him in it that she watched all the time, it wasn't even a western, but he was essentially the same character in that movie as he was every other movie he played in because his acting style was so bland. I guess in a way you could say the same about Clint Eastwood but i think his "badass" role is way better than John Wayne's.

I really liked Lee Van Cleef in FAFDM. One look into those eyes and you knew he meant business.

I've gotta say, out of all the westerns I have watched, this is by far the best, anytime it is on I can sit there for the 3+hours and watch it.
Tombstone a very close second.

Hmmm . . .
I like all Clint's Westerns, so in addition to his . . .
Tombstone
Open Range
Hombre (Paul Newman)
I like John Wayne movies as well, but none really standout. Out of the ones I have seen 'Hondo' and 'The Searchers' would be my favorites to date.
I also like the remake of '3.10 to Yuma' from a few years ago.
I am looking forward to seeing new 'True Grit' too.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Appaloosa yet. I thought it was pretty good. Also it may not really qualify as a western but The Will Be Blood is a badass movie.
