I am sad to say that wednesday I am putting my pug "Gizmo" to rest. I picked her out of the litter and now it is her time to move on. She has been my best friend for a little over 10 years now and she will be missed like no other. I cannot imagine what it is going to be like to come home and not have her there waiting for me.I know that in my heart it is best for her so she is not in any pain, but it does not make it easy.
Gizmo I know you will be in a better place and RIP baby girl.
Here is a couple pics of my girl:

Sorry to hear that. We just had one of our Boxers come down with cancer and had to put him to sleep. He was just over a year old. Good luck.
I lost my mandy just before the kick off of superbowl sunday 2007. Its hard to believe its going to be 4 years. She was a retriever bloodhound mix. I still have her pink TOP PAW collor. Its on the desk in front of me right now. A day or two after she passed I went to petsmart and had 3 pink heart dog tags made for my wife, my daughter, and myself. Its engraved MANDY SEAN LOVES YOU 2-4-07. The others have something besides sean. It helped a lot and I keep it here at the house. When she was getting old and I could tell it was getting close I went and got a puppy so they could meet. For some reason I like the old to have some contact with the new. I feel like a piece of mandy is in sam (the new dog) now. We have 2 great dogs now but we all still miss mandy quite a bit. I am very sorry for what your going through. I am sure Gizmo will be playing with my mandy and everyone elses puppies that have passed on soon.

I lost my Brownie after 18 years of loyalty and love. That was my best friend right there, I still think about him from time to time and even find pics of him from back in the day that make me laugh...
Sorry to hear that, man. We had to put down our 10 year old Golden mix, Francis, back in November. It sucks. :(

Sorry to hear, it's a sad thing to take on a companion knowing one day you may have to say goodbye...and the longer you spend with them (we all want as many years as we can get) the harder it is to do what is "best" for them. She's going to join some of the best of our pets on the other side.

Thanks for the kind words everyone. I know she is looking down on me right now telling me to stop being sad and that she is in good health and happy. My heart feels like it is ripping in two, but my brain is telling me I did the right thing. I held her while she went into her final sleep and just got done burying her in her favorite spot. RIP Giz and keep an eye out for me I will join you one day and we can be together again.

The hardest thing for me to do was watch my wife hold our cat for that last breath. It is still an image I can't forget, and seeing how much it hurt her made it that much worse for me...we put him down on Christmas Eve to top it all. It was certainly a sad year, but I have trouble remembering where his journey ended with our family and our new cat, who is named Gizmo, began his. He sleeps in bed with us, is a giant punk to our other two cats, and is almost like he was reborn so to speak. Every trait is the same, it's uncanny.
It's tough, and takes a lot to do what you did, but holding them and keeping them comfortable is probably the best thing you can do for them. I know what you felt, that's for sure. I don't see how people can just take them in, and let it be done behind closed doors...because the people working in vets are so disconnected with it as they deal with that every day but when it's a family member it's harder to throw them around and treat them like an object.

I share your pain as well. We put our Boxer down 3/18/2010. She was 10 years 4 months to the very day. We had her cremated (good suggestion by a SBZ member) and we keep her with us at the house with a few pictures of her.
We were given the opportunity to adopt yet another SBZ member's 1 year old male Boxer a few months later who had some life changes that forced them to give him up so we took them up on their offer after meeting him and them. Shelby has been a blessing to helping us with our loss. He is NOT a replacement but like a new brother to Bailey that we hug on and love. And he is there for us when we start missing Bailey. He knows and he comforts us. Every once in a while I will lay my head on him and listen to his heartbeat and breathing and remember the very last breath she took as she went to sleep. It is like he knows what I am doing and lets me lay my head on him and go to sleep.
We love Shelby to death and he has become a huge addition to our family. We were blessed with having him adopt us just as we adopted him. Plus we gained his former family as family also. They come see him when they can either here or at cruise ins, etc.
Take care and be strong for Gizmo. I have had Pugs in a younger life and they are great dogs. When the time is right pick up a new pet, just don't look for or expect a replacement. You will never find one.
We highly suggest having her cremated. It is a much nicer way than putting a pet in the cold ground. Not cheap but well worth the price. CHAR MAC on Hamilton Avenue is VERY professional. They guarantee the remains to be your pet. They do each pet one at a time. Many will do several pets together at a lower price but not tell you that. These people were very nice and have good hours of operation. 513-851-5791 is their business number.

He is one hell of a smart dog.

Mandy was adopted. I believe she was around 8 or so when she passed. When she was @ 6 she got very weak and couldnt stand up. I took her to the vet and on the way she blacked out. I got her to the vet and carried her in. They got her woke up but told me to get her to the animal hospital NOW. They told me they called ahead and let them know i was on my way. Half her heart quit on the way there and I was told she died. I pulled up in the front of the hospital and as I was carrying her in 4 people including a doctor ran out and took her from me. They revived her and kept her for a few days. Turns out she had something called addison's disease. Common to blood hounds. The vet bill was just under 1000.00 and she was put on pills she had to take for the rest of her life that cost about 250 a month. I think you will be fine just read up on the disease and talk with your vet. They are great dogs and I plan on finding another bloodhound retriever mix again some day.
I was also told it happens mostly in young to middle aged FEMALE dogs too.
