Project Bottle to Boost

I've been meaning to make a project post about my car for a while now. Few months ago I traded my nitrous R block 347/C4 combo for a Boss block 338/TFS High Ports/PG/T6 turbo hot side/under the dash A2W intercooler combo (basically blewpastyou's whole old combo). Here is how it looks right now.

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5089/5229986836_944e49fff2_z.jpg

Taking my car up to my friend Rob Lasota's house (Lasota racing) this weekend for him to fab up the cold side and mount the intercooler. Hope to have it all together by spring.

What turbo are you going to run? I was going to use a 91.5 g trim. 1.0a/r, would make alot of steam!!

I'll be running a precision PT88 with a T6 hotside. Precision told me it can support 1250hp at the crank.

And here I am dreaming of a decent 75-100 shot wet kit install...it seems like people are getting out of nitrous and going to boost. Is this just a preference thing, or are there some issues with nitrous prices, regulations on it, etc? In this economy, it's the only way I'll ever see 300-350hp to the wheels. I think I had a Precision PT63 on my laser rs awd and I thought that thing was wild on the boost (was running 28psi on street tune).

The old setup sounds like it was pretty mean, but this just looks insane. Any idea what numbers it'll be putting down, track times, etc..? What did the old setup make?

Mainly just a performance thing...and I wanted to mess with something different. I have had some kind of nitrous kit on my car since ~98. I was wanting to step up the performance of my car this next year. So I had been thinking of switching over to a turbo for awhile now. If I wanted to stay with nitrous and step it up I was going to have to build a new windsor based stroker motor to get close to the same performance level.

My old 347 on E85 put down 401hp/380tq N/A to the tire threw a C4. Probably was making around 530-540ish on a 150 shot. The new turbo combo will also be running on E85 using 160# injectors and a FAST EFI system to tune it. I'll be very happy if it makes 900+ at the tire once I turn the boost up. Still have several big $ pieces to buy before spring..converter/boost controller/7531 box. If it makes the power it should I'm looking at being really nuts and running some of the localish outlaw 8.5" tire stuff.

Nice numbers on the old setup, it's good to see there are some brains to pick here once I dive into my nitrous setup. I'm looking forward to seeing this one run, hopefully you have it ready for the season.

I've gotta get a lot of things done before I even start building my nitrous kit, first being wideband and fuel pressure gauges and a good tuner. I'm not much of a drag racer, I just like sports driving and the engine stock is plenty fun for me but it's always nice to have a little somethin' extra under the hood when I need it. There are a lot of used kits and stuff for sale, anything to watch out for when buying used or should I just buy new? I'm looking at that NX plate setup and similar wet kits. With respect, I'm not trying to derail your thread so if you want I can go PM just let me know. Thanks!

I wouldnt do the TB plate kit, mb the intake spacer nitrous kit but not the TB plate kit. Ive heard bad stories about those, i have always used single foggers in the intake before the TB, works best/cheapest. If you need a nitrous kit pm me i have one for sale.

on the appropriate size motors for a t4 and t6 housing why would the turbine side be rated for more horsepower? the compressors side would be the exact same therfore flowing the same and last i check airflow = horsepower

You kidding?

dsmawd350
12-09-2010, 10:21 PM
no im not kidding. its right there from precision. the t4 and t6 are rated at the same power. put the appropriate housing on the right engine combo and they will make the same peak power. nothing changes on the compresser side so how does it suddenly flow more air to make this extra power.

sure a t6 on a 427 inch motor might make more than a t4 but that wasnt what was mentioned it was rating from the manufacturer. and the turbine housing alone isnt gonna make more power unless its too small to start with, but like i said thats not what was being compared

dsmawd350
12-09-2010, 10:34 PM
like i said you dont need them on a engine to prove my point. take the SAME EXACT turbo. subject it to flow testing only thing changed swap between a t6 and t4 turbine housing. is the turbo gonna flow more air now?

Lot more involved than cubic inches being only factor when looking at a T4 vs. a T6, but I hear what you're saying. The A/R will most likely have a larger impact in this case.

Nice build Jeff. I remember watching that kit being made. Very nice. :bigthumb

It's all good guys...good info coming out. My turbo was originally a T4 pt88. Rob had it on a 393 and ran into severe backpressure issues with it. He sent it back to precision and had them put a T6 hotside from a 91mm..think it's a F-trim. That helped this backpressure issue some. Then he downsized to a 358 which was even better. I talked to precision about the this turbo. They said it should work well on a 338.

dsmawd350
12-10-2010, 12:23 AM
Yeah t6 vs t4 when there is an actual motor involved can make huge differences. i was speaking purely peak hp ratings . it should have no affect. I actually have a t6 flanged 74mm and the turbine wheel itself I think is gonna be a little small for a 383. need to go 90+ on the turbine wheel

Got some more updates from my buddy Rob Lasota who is doing all the fab work I need done for me (cold side, mounting alots of stuff). Here is what he sent me.

Waiting on the tubing and flanges for the intercooler I started on the cooling system. The motor plate is all done, I just need to make the crossmember and transmission mount.

The motor is set back as far as it can go. Jeff wanted to keep the large radiator as the car will see some street time, so we had to make some modifications to get the radiator forward. I have a similar setup on my car.
http://www.lasotaracing.com/rob/mount1.jpg
http://www.lasotaracing.com/rob/mount2.jpg

The radiator will be located on the bottom with pins welded to the radiator that drop through a rubber grommet and through the lower mounts. I made a plate for the top that just bolts flush with the upper radiator support. Remove 2 bolts and out it will come.

http://www.lasotaracing.com/rob/mount3.jpg
http://www.lasotaracing.com/rob/mount4.jpg

The next challenge was getting the radiator mounted water pump in a location that would clear the turbo setup. If it was just square on either side the radiator would be so far forward the bumper wouldn't go on, so I came up with this. The wastegate tube will get moved when I re-do the crossover once the headers come back and the flex joint comes in.

http://www.lasotaracing.com/rob/pump.jpg

Welding on a used radiator can be a challenge, it turned out OK, I would have liked for it to be a little cleaner but it is what it is. I need to finish the radiator and pressure test it. We will use a remote fill on the upper hose.

http://www.lasotaracing.com/rob/pump2.jpg

This gives you an idea of what I was working with. The radiator sits at an angle now with the top further forward than the bottom. With the motor back all the way and the radiator under the upper support we still only have about 3". That's more than a lot of people run, but I always like to have as much space as possible.

That's very cool, I'm really digging the tubular lower support. Walter and I were just talking the other day about clearance in front of the WP.

So does the DP route through the driver side suspension? Or does it go back under the steering column?

What you see of the DP is what there is for a DP in race trim. Rob has a 4" aluminum DP setup off his old combo that he's going to try to mod to make work for me to run the exhaust back to the axle for street use.

I know of a certain car that used to be a turbo (has nothing in it now) that had about a 4 foot long DP that didnt sound that loud.
but sadly that car doesnt see street time any more, since its part of the concrete it sits on.LOL.

Got an update from Rob over the weekend on his progress on my car.

"Cooling system is 100%, had to make a remote fill. Turned out great. Intercooler is mounted (crammed) under the dash, it was very, very tight and took some creativity. Have to cut the hole for the throttle body in the firewall and finish that pipe and mount the water resevoir. Tranny cross-member is done, all the mounts are done and painted. It's close. The alternator is going to be tricky, not much room for it.

http://www.lasotaracing.com/rob/bay.jpg
http://www.lasotaracing.com/rob/radfront.jpg
http://www.lasotaracing.com/rob/intercooler.JPG

The inlet on the intercooler was tight, I had to box the tube to the intercooler because there wasnt room to weld the entire diameter to the end tank. Cooler couldnt move down because of the floor and the passthrough is as high as it can go. It was about a 1" section that I couldnt get to to weld that required the box. It will be stronger like this anyhow."

Radiator mounted meziere waterpump with 2 12an output lines going to the timing cover. Not much room for a fan..but I'm sure I'll be able to make something fit in there. Plus I'll probably put a pusher fan on the front side of the radiator also.

Been able to get some stuff done on my coupe in the last week or so. I got a T6 turbo blanket put on along with insulating my fan and getting it in a little better position. With the help of Jason408 on Sunday, we got my new strange front struts and AJE c/c plates put on. Also we got my air to water intercooler (and tranny cooler) tank mounted in the trunk and water lines ran and plumbed up. We attempted to get my PG tranny put back in the car but ran into a few issues. Most of which I got figured out today..but I'm still working beating the tranny tunnel into submission. A PG with a sfi case shield is a very tight fit in a foxbody trans tunnel. I hope have it in the car once I can swing a mini-sledge hammer under the car for another 20-30 minutes...my arms are done after today. Tonight Paul408Notch came over to help me figure out my used hacked up FAST harness. Need to get a FAST wideband harness ordered this week for it. Hope to have it installed in the car in the next week. Lots of little stuff left to do..but getting closer.

Big thanks to Jason408. He came over last night and helped me get the tranny and converter in last night and all bolted up. I need to pickup 1 fitting today on my way home from work to be able to finish the tranny cooler lines. Also picking up a couple weather pack connectors today to put on the MSD distributer and crank sensor wires so they plug in to the FAST harness. It's getting there...lots of little stuff left.

Got a bunch more done this weekend. Got the FAST harness all ran and the rest of the wiring finish. Had to convert all my old nitrous wiring circuits over to what I need now. Also got the engine bay pretty much buttoned up. Still need to set the msd crank sensor air gap and initial timing for the FAST. Got the interior carpet put back in. Still need to mount the shifter and adjust the linkage, then put the seats back in. I hope to do the initial start up on wednesday if the 4an peterson inline filter shows up that I ordered last week for the turbo oil feed line. If all goes well...then off to the dyno either thursday afternoon or friday. Then head to t&t for it's first test passes at edgewater friday night. Then heading to London,KY on saturday for London Dragway's outlaw 8.5 race with some of the other local 8.5 racers. Few updated pics of the engine bay.

It's alive :coo1:....started it up for the first time yesterday afternoon. Got it to idle and did the first heat cycle on it. Still have a few FAST system sensor issues to figure out. For some reason the FAST is not seeing the IAT and Water temp sensors so it defaults to high temp values to stay safe I guess. It may also be a firmware software issue with the FAST box. I'm just really relieved that the motor started and ran ok since I got the whole motor in a trade...so I didn't have anything to do with the build of it. Hope to be able to talk to FAST's tech help line on monday to figure out sensor problem. Once that's fixed..then it will go on the dyno to get tuned and the engine broke in.

Well...going to have a slight delay. After talking to the FAST tech guy yesterday we determined there is something not working right with my used FAST box. So I'm shipping it back to them today to have it checked out. Should have it back by the end of next week.

I peeled those stickers off the car waiting for adam to get back from lunch the other day. If all goes well and no other stupid crap goes wrong...it should be on the dyno this afternoon. Then at edgewater tonight:bigthumb

Got the car on the dyno late this afternoon..started working on the tune. Taking baby steps with the boost levels and keeping it safe. So far 726rwhp/575rwtq at 11.5# at 6700rpm:D Be back at it tomorrow to get the tune finished up I hope.

Got finished on the dyno about 11pm Saturday night....final tune got 13.8# of boost at 7600rpm. That is the air flow limit of the S475 75mm turbo on my motor. We cranked the boost up a few #'s so it made more boost earlier in the rpm band..but then just fell off even faster..didn't hold it much at all. Planning on going to Kilkare thursday night to make some initial test runs...then will be at edgewater friday night for the limited 8.5 race.

We never really found the issue...but a fresh set of -10 plugs fixed it. Think maybe the porcelain cracked on a plug that caused a cylinder to start missing.

Getting the waste gate figured out. Put a 18# spring in the gate. Don't think the boost #'s I saw on the dyno were that accurate....was having boost creap.
First real night at the track with the car running right last night. Got it to go a 5.94 at 118 w/ 1.39 60' at 3360#.
Pretty happy with that for the first night out...even made it to the 2nd round of the limted 8.5 race at edgewater.

Have give a big thanks to Adam @ S&M motorsports and Jason408 for helping get the car tuned and setup. Still a good bit more to be found. But I'm very happy we got it to run a 5.94 at 118 w/1.39 60' the first real trip to the track with it. Also gotta thank Timado and Ian (Drivermod) for giving me a hand with the car between rounds and lining me up.
Took it down to Bluegrass Raceway in Owingsville, KY for the last NOP race of the season to run in the Outlaw 8.5 class. Track was working pretty well.
Did this on my 2nd round Qualifing pass.
1.38 60' on the back tires.

Yes..that is the plan right now. Jenn and I get home from being on vacation late saterday night. Get up on sunday...throw the car on the trailer and head up to Kilkare. Will be basically using the day to test for the last edgewater 8.5 race next friday night.

Yep...pretty happy with it. Still have to figure out a good bit with the car. There is alot more ET to be found with the power the car has shown on the dyno. Just have the to get it to the ground. I planned on this year being a test year for me to get the car close for running limited next year...depending on class rule changes.
